Today's tv taping with the Police

A very unique & intimate 2.5 hours with the Police & Elvis as host. The show opened with Elvis twice singing a slow acoustic version of ELTSDIM which sent chills up my spine. I was in row 4, dead center. The Actor, Matt Modine, was sitting direcly in front of me.

FULL DETAILS>>>>
The following is directly from the Show Rundown (a printout of the taping schedule). They had just over 1:41 of taping scheduled for this hourlong program, so there will be quite a bit cut.

It's Episode 105: Spectacle: Elvis Costello with The Police

Opening: Elvis Costello Performance:
Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic (Acoustic Solo)
Please Stay/Every Breath You Take (Elvis Costello, vocals & guitar; Davey Faragher, bass; Steve Nieve, keys; Pete Thomas, drums

Elvis introduces the show with house band playing Demolition Man, rather than sit or stand & bow/wave, they kept walking from their entrance on one side of the stage to their exit on the other.

Elvis then interviewed Andy & they performed Weird Nightmare. During Andy's 15 minute interview, they spent a bit of time discussing his earliest playing, & how he was there for the rise & fall of Jimi Hendrix & how his guitar style inspired that of The Edge.

Elvis then interviewed Stewart, beginning his 15 minute segment with discussion of the infamous blog post that followed the Vancouver show, which while it caused some heat early on, was something he said they laugh about now. The subject of U2 came up again when Elvis mentioned that in that band how Larry Mullen Jr. is sort of the one who keeps them grounded & asked if Stewart played that role in The Police. Personally, I can't imagine how. He then went on to say how over the years he'd forgotten about getting The Police back together, much in the way a child who wins a football trophy stops seeing so much in that trophy as the years go by.

When asked about the release of the live DVD (including the documentary filmed by his son), Stewart said "business people" keep mentioning 4th quarter. Can it really be out by Christmas of this year? Nice!

Elvis then interviewed Sting. They performed Flow My Tears, trading the vocals, with Sting on lute. Sting discussed how for a child growing up where he did, where most end up working with coal in the shipyards, his success has been a dream. He spoke about how Roxanne was inspired by Costello's Alison, because of it's wishy washy title for such an edgy band. He called the song a "punk tango," & they then went into a duet of Alison, with Sting joining Elvis on the chorus. Sting mentioned Dusty Springfield & Ella Fitzgerald as influences on his vocal delivery.

Elvis then interviewed the entire band together. When asked their favorite Police song, Stewart named several, including Born in the 50s, Can't Stand Losing You & Message in a Bottle. Andy chose Message in a Bottle & Sting offered Miss Gradenko & Mother.

For the final performance, which included Elvis Costello & the house band, they performed:
Sunshine of Your Love
Watching the Detectives/Walking on the Moon
Purple Haze
Sunshine of Your Love

Nick,

I read October and December. Don't know what is the truth at this point...

"He then went on to say how over the years he'd forgotten about getting The Police back together, much in the way a child who wins a football trophy stops seeing so much in that trophy as the years go by."

BULL$H*T!

He didn't want anything more than putting the band together again for 23 years. All his interviews prove it. That is another of the scripted answers of this tour. 8)

And yes, he grounds the rest of the Police. Then he cracks their ribs...

Excellent recap! Thank you!

I also read about the October/November timeframe.
It depends on what network you'll see it on. I think it will be first to air on Sundance and then PBS(?) later. Forget where I read it, but I felt like it was pretty official. I'll see if I can find it again.

Surely Sting decided that reforming the band was good to surprise people, surprise himself and then this little devil came on his shoulder and said "Reform the Police"! and the angel on the other shoulder said "Oh no you don't want to do that"!

Stewart's schtick: and so I made this little movie from the Super 8s that I had in a shoebox in the garage, and I thought: that's the final period. And then Les told me to send my little private movie to Sundance....

Finally, Andy stated that all this hoopla about the End it's actually a couple of years'hiatus and he's ready to rock again at 67, no matter what, because you never know what might happen and actually he's making a movie so that he can send it to Sundance and....Groundhog Day....

These are their stories, they are sticking to them, we know'em by heart and... my personal opinion is that they are scripts that they dutifully followed for the duration of the tour.

They would indeed be formidable in a Court of Law!!!

I was sitting directly behind Stewarts wife, Fiona. When the taping was over and everyone was getting up to leave, I told her how much I appreciated her support of Stewart over the last year. She smiling acknowledged my comments...

... and had me physically removed from the building.

Ha-ha... j/k
I miss my Police buddies...

I was in the 5th row ALL the way on the left side of the house. It was an amazing, remarkable evening. I was recaping the show for my blog on my blackberry on the train home to find I had accidently deleted it.

Met a few Nutters, which was neat. I also got to dance with copelandgirl_5 at the end, which was kewl.

What a great show this was. After the fabulous end of the tour show on Tuesday, the Spectacle show at the Apollo Theater was yet another treat.

In addition to what was previously said, Stewart mentioned the Documentary DVD that Jordon did and Sting demonstrated the originally intended rendition of Roxanne before it was Policified which was great.

Copelandgirl5 and I got to shake Derek Power's hand while we were in line and thanked him again for getting the fans tickets to the event and expressed our gratitude for Cynthia's hard work for all of this.

The most notable celebrity I spotted was former MTV VJ Matt Pinfield who was standing right next to us in the VIP line.

If he's being truly honest about his response, then why didn't at least Miss Gradenko make it into the set list on this tour? I can understand the reluctance at putting Mother into the set.

that was surely Sting joking

while watching the show something came to my mind which might only interest about 2 people in the world:

Adam Ant

- Andy's jacket / looks like the one Jimi Hendrix and Adam Ant had
- the background / looks like coming from the Prince Charming album
- two drummers !

I've certainly got too much free time on my hands...

now it's time to get closer to MSG!!!

As long as Andy doesn't put on war paint a la Adam Ant and wear pirate boots, that's fine with me.
Poor Adam Ant. Life hasn't been kind to him these past 20 years or so.
