I've always said I would get this from video to digital and post it here, but alas, someone's copy of a copy of my copy has beat me to it.

The quality is crap. But it is indeed a unique performance.

Rowan Atkinson on tambourine? Is that really him? It looks like him but a little hard to tell. What's the story behind this performance? It just seems an odd place for Rowan Atkinson to turn up! Any history behind this?

Is your copy of this clearer than the one posted on Youtube?

My copy is a little clearer, yes, but not much.

I originally received it from someone in the UK about 15 years ago. Had it converted from PAL to NTSC and that's where the real loss in quality starts. But at least I have the first original conversion.

Yes, that is Bean on tambourine.

I gave a copy of this to Ian Copeland once, who said he would get to Stewart as he would have an interest in it. I'm not sure if Ian actually got it to him (He could have just been nice in saying 'Yes.' lol).

I also asked Mark King (the bassist) about it and here was his response:

[i]"Oh yeah................. This was on the Wogan show and was one of the first Children in Need nights, 1985 I think. We had a call from Stewart Copeland’s office asking if I could play bass in a band he was putting together for the night.
I jumped at the chance, as like you I thought Stewart Copeland was a cool drummer and we could really get our teeth into something here – but wait! Stewart wanted to play guitar, not drums – bummer!
Anyway, we were joined by Mark Brzezicki on drums, Rowan Atkinson on tambourine (he is quite a ‘fusion’ fan and plays very well), and Nick Kershaw on guitar. I had a good time."[/i]

Thannnnks for the post. I've always liked that song.
I thought that was our favorite blue polky dot shirt I saw peeking out there Tambourine seems to be the perfect instrument for Mr. Bean. Anything else might be a tad too complicated!

Thanks! That's an interesting story. It looks like a Not-the-9:00-News character Rowan Atkinson, and the last person I would have expected performing with a group like that! It's one of my favorite KK songs and a good live performance. Thanks for posting it.
