Rare police demos and stuff......

Postby bluescoobyblue on 31 Aug 2007 16:23

I know I'm probably a bit slow on this one, but I recently discovered the GITM demos on youtube and was wondering if anymore exist for any other albums.

....and why are these the only ones that leaked out??!!

I would love to hear demos from Synchronicity era or if theres any songs that didnt make the album.

(The last exit version of so lonely is just surreal!!! Like Police doing Level 42!!!!)

Some exist for their solo works, but I haven't seen (or heard of) any from their Police albums. Anyone else?

Probably because Stink wanted the world to know what a musical genius he was

Just kidding!

Stink :o

Kroc, you are too much. I wonder if those demos are like the official concert (i.e. they suck). In the meanwhile, any posting on you tube of the throw-away-sticks-back-to-drumstool-Stew? I have one but it's obviously taken with a cell phone.

They all seem to be set to the same drum machine but the stand out one for me is secret journey.Always my favourite Police track and the demo is not far off from the original. However you can see why the others didnt quite make it.................I can just see Stewart and Andys faces when Stingo played them!

Seems like we'll never see that one played live ...shame!!

I love all of them... though probably my favorite would be the ELTSDIM demo... (i.e. same version you hear on the radio from the GITM album, minus the guitar and drums!) Blows me away every time!

Is that the Strontium 90 version (acoustic and a lot slower??)

The Last Exit track Fool In Love which is So Lonely in disguise is not bad actually!! Strange hearing those lyrics set to an entirely different backing.

Now can anyone tell me about the "alternative" collection that is trying to be released (not message in a box 2) and just what would be on it??!!

I know of (and have) one CD of Sting's demos, from Soul Cages. While interesting (it's my second-fave Sting album), it's not particularly exciting (like Dream Of The Blue Turtles demos would be, or other early stuff). Neat to have, but not essential.

I have a story behind my "Stink" comment, but I'm leaving work now so it will have to wait!

If you can, post it backchannel... Maybe it has to do with the catsuit or "weapon of mass destruction"...you know where to find me...
I am also going to look for these demos. There are different opinions, so it must be interesting.

In a while.... 8)

Well, Don't you believe me is absolutely a huge potential song...
Very obscure, a hint of the Synchro direction already there...
Plus the picture!

They have a different vibe going in that song. I agree, great potential there.

GITM demos are the only ones available, but these are STING's demos, not The Police ones !
My best wish would be to find some other versions of songs that The Police recorded in studio.

A couple of the unreleased ones are really good, but, come on, Secret Journey with the drum machine, synths, and without The And really sucks.

This makes you appreciate how much Stew and Andy add to Sting's material. Really.

Anyway, why not releasing it?

QUOTE: "Secret Journey with the drum machine, synths, and without The And really sucks."

It's a DEMO. They're not meant to be the finished song - I doubt Sting went in and said, "Right, Stewart, play this exactly like the drum machine." Having never heard these myself until today, I was amazed at how little the final arrangements were changed. To me this really underlines the frustration Stewart and Andy probably felt - these songs were basically complete from the beginning.

Well, it's in the Eye of the Beholder.
I know what a DEMO is. I.HIT.STRINGS.WITH.FINGERS.
Steve Winwood did it "all by himself" in the 80s and the abhorred synths. I know about several of the reasons why he did it. The songs were absolutely great, and were totally ruined by wanting to put out not one but 2 albums all by himself.

What I meant is that even if the songs were practically complete and basically what Sting did was nixing every change or erasing it (as we all know) and using Stew and And as session men, these two stll managed to get some SOUL into the DEMO. 8)
