Way OT: A short video by Da Weasel & Son

Yesterday afternoon, I'd finished a few large work projects and was feeling like doing something music oriented, and at the same time, my 8-yo son was looking bored and lolling around the house doing nothing.

So, killing two birds with one stone, I had him be my cinematographer/DP and made a short music video, a cover of Neil Young's "Old Man". After we filmed, he tried to help edit too, but quickly drove me insane with his barking directions over my shoulder ("No! That's too short! Why are you using that effect? It's too dark! Wait, go back! Noooo!!!!"), so I fired him. :D

But still, he did a good job and took great camera direction. Maybe there's hope for him yet in the cold, cruel world of Hollywood.

Here's the vid:

That's amazing. I'm sure you've said somewhere what you do for a living, but i don't remember...is it something like this? Your voice is great; perfect for that song, and your son must be thrilled to see this on YouTube! He did a heck of a job for a little guy! (I know; no 8-year-old boy in his right mind wants to be called a little guy...but I have one too, and he's my little guy, fighting it every step of the way! :D )

Jeff does "full-service advertising, marketing and public relations... for the music/audio products, technology and entertainment industries".

I think he's magnificent with a camera, computer, guitar, mic... he is one very talented and artistic guy. Of course, I'm a little biased.

And Jr. Weasel seems to have inherited quite a bit of it too, as far as I can tell.

Thank you, folks. In as much as I do enjoy compliments about my musical ability (and no musician doesn't), I think the only reason why I'm showing this to people is that I got to do this with my boy.

Doing stuff with your kid is about as cool as it gets, perhaps even more so when it's something that involves your own passion, which in my case is music. My son really hasn't shown an interest in learning a musical instrument (and that's fine), but he has taken well to things that involve technology. So, working a digital camera and watching me edit was really fun for him, so it was all the more cool for me.

In any case, again, thanks for the nice thoughts. :)

Urgghhhh. Yes, I have, but it's not my specialty. I prefer, instead, to do the ideation and planning and scripting, but let others handle the nuts-and-bolts side of things. When I'm doing it with subject matter that doesn't thrill me in any way, I find it pretty tedious. SO, I farm those jobs out these days.

But yeah, I've done promo vids, training vids, even long-format corporate vids with well-known actors. Again, I do enjoy it when I do it as a hobby, and as long as I keep it more an avocation than a vocation, I'll probably keep enjoying it. :)

Nice!

Mr Weasel, you are a man of many talents, and it looks like the apple fell very close to the tree! Your kid's got pretty steady hands!

I can relate to the video, what with a 6 year old boy myself. And great choice of songs....love Neil Young. That particular song is one of the best 'father/son' songs ever written IMO. You did it justice.

Thanks for sharing.

You're an impressive guy, Weasel...not just for your musical and technical abilities and sharp wit, but also for the really great way you talk about those in your life who matter most!

I'm glad you and your son could share this moment! You sound like an awesome dad!

Well, thanks again, everyone!

Just so ya know: I'm pretty much constantly working on music, and I rarely inflict my stuff on the general public. I was just proud of my boy for working on something with the Old Man, so to speak. I thought you might enjoy, and I'm glad you did.

Sometime in the next six months to a year, I'll be wrapping up an album of original tunes, and I'll probably alert you at that point in case you want to torture yourself by listening to my stuff. In the meantime, thanks again for recognizing the efforts of a little father/son Friday afternoon project. :)
