Police on Old Grey Whistle Test - shortly after Andy joined

Quite funny to see that Sting had to wear Stewart's glasses because of a hairspray incident! Tight but very energetic, I love how Stew pushes the boom mic away so cavalierly, while maintaining his almost metronome-like beat ...

P.S can anyone type in what should be typed to hyperlink this, using 'arl' instead of 'url'? I can't figure this out and Im starting to feel silly ...

Underneath the cymbal you can see the word "COPELAND". Wouldn't want somebody walking off with your cymbal. That's cute.

This is available on dvd as 'the old grey whistle test.' Go and buy it now! It's the best dvd I've bought in a few years (besides The Police stuff of course). It's got The Police stuff, plus performances from the 70's of Marley, Ramones, Alice Cooper, Edgar Winter Group, XTC, The Damned, Lynyrd Skynrd (before the crash), bill withers, interviews with the stones, and tons more. ITS AWESOME and I got it at sam's club 2 years ago for like $9.

One of my favourite bits of early police footage this. I love the fact that you can see Stew really going for it. (I always liked the 'COPELAND' scratched into the underside of his cymbal too shyvixen - like writing your name inside your gym shoes at primary school!).

Its funny that you mention those other performances, because that was what I was doing all day yesterday! I watched the Ramones, XTC, Wailers etc. I couldnt believe how much stuff had been uploaded to Youtube from that show. I also watched a crapload of Don Kirshner stuff, which is another great resource for 70s archival footage ... it was a very lazy sunday, hehehehe ....

That's a great idea actually....funds earned from my job in high school went entirely to the cymbal fund. Those chunks of metal ain't cheap!

You can practically smell the peroxide ;)

This is a great clip, I've seen it a few times over the years and I still rank it as one of the best.

Thanks for the cool link! OMG....look at those sunglasses. I can just see Elton John battling Sting for them.

And exactly what had he been taking to merit those, I wonder?

He took some hairspray in the face (especially the eyes) - thats what he took! I'm sure it was embarassing at the time, so he covered it up by borrowing Stewart's glasses. He could probably look back and laugh now ... they DO look like mid-70s era Elton John specs. Maybe it was a saturday night and Sting felt like it was alright for fighting (snare snare crash)

About the "Copeland" graffiti under the cymbal...
Go try and touch a drummer's kit...See what happens.

I wonder if somebody has the cymbal and would put it on eBay.... :?:

 I've taken a shot of hairspray to the eyes ~ not pretty!! Personally, I always thought that stuff was better than mace..... What a trooper to just plonk on the glasses and go.

I wonder if Stew still has the same cymbal! LOL
