Hanging out at Wisseloord Studios......

Postby neonhunter on 11 Jul 2007 22:48

By 1982 I was a serious Police fan. They had become my role models--monster musicians with ambition to match and a super-cool aesthetic. How great to travel the world with your "team," your instrument, a camera, and a journal. Suddenly, late that year, I got lucky and was doing it.....Summer of '84 found us in Amsterdam as part of a publicity tour. Our record company guy suggested we take a ride out to this recording studio in the middle of a forest. I had my headphones on listening to "Zenyatta" as we pulled up to Wisseloord Studios--where that record was recorded! Man, I was ecstatic. To be in the very room where "Driven to Tears" was cut: For a young musician it doesn't get any better! What a place to work: Floor-to-ceiling windows in the middle of a forest, a coffee bar right outside the studio door.....Ahhh, yes. Please indulge me. These memories are like fine wine, opened by you groovy people of the Krypton Forum.

Not to rain on your parade Neonhunter but wasn't Outlandos recorded at Surrey Sound Studios in Leatherhead? I think it was Zenyatta at Wisseloord

I'm pretty sure that it was only zenyatta that was recorded there. Previous albums were recorded in the uk.

It was a GREAT story neonhunter... I'm sure none of us meant to rain on your parade! Like you said - whatever songs they recorded there it must have been goosebumpy!

Very Cool info !

I have always loved that studio where most of Zenyatta was recorded.

I was a young musician looking at the back cover of that album, I love those pictures...and you were there !!! Copeland leaning on his drums with taped fingers, Sting sitting with his fretless, Andy with the umbrella.

burned into my brain.

I would have freaked out !

Did it look like the shots on the back of the Zenyatta album?

Good story Buddy !!!

"Scrambled Eggs" was also the original title of the song "Yesterday" by the Beatles.

Oh, if I could only replace all this music trivia in my fevered brain with information about where I left my cell phone/car keys...;)

Thanks Craig! You know, I always wondered what happened to the collaboration between our boys and Nigel Gray, and the answer was in the Mojo interview posted this month. Shame, also, since I think he gets some credit for the Police sound, along with Stewart, who is shamefully underappreciated by most folks in this regard.
On Google - site:stewartcopeland.net "your keyword here" - thanks DM!!

I had to laugh about the reason Nigel goes to Spain three days a month. A bit personal, don't you think, Craig?

I can't remember if you asked him, Craig, but did you find out if that was an imposter posting as Nigel over on Ask Uncle Ian Message Board a few years ago?
