There is hope for young women in music

Postby AZPEARTPORTNOY on 08 Jul 2007 00:54

I have to say I'm new to Kelly Clarkson, but, man she did a great job. With the way so many young gals either sell their look or are forced to sell their look, it's refreshing to see her go out and really rip it up. I'm not saying she's not cute but I just got the feeling the music really mattered to her. Well done.

As much as I hate manufactured pop I have to say I find Kelly Clarkson pretty tolerable ;)
She's got a great scream on her - not quite Courtney Love or Kat Bjelland but she's got a really ballsy voice.

I have always admired Alicia Keys. And yeah - Kelly owned that stage.

When the Pussycat Dolls were on, my wife asked, "Is that the Spice Girls?"

I love my wife!

Now *that's* an image. ;)

Ironically, I thought Madonna was terrific. (Ironic because she's taken a lot of heat for being a whore...but there's no denying the woman can put on a show.)

I thought KT Tunstall was pretty good, too, even with the gold leggings.

You know, they did have a fair diversity of acts...I got to watch a lot of the Rio and Johannesburg shows, and they were both excellent.

I'm not familliar with Lily Allen but if you think she's great, good enough. My point was that at least hear in the U.S., young women in music just seem to sell the look and the music is a distant second or third. Ms. Clarkson seemed to be the real deal, and in this day and age, that is refreshing.

I also heard quite a story about her new c.d. The record company was not happy with about five of the tracks on the c.d. and offered her something like two- three million dollars to take them off the c.d. and replace them with songs from other writers, she turned them down. She felt so strongly about those five songs she turned them down. That may come back and bite her in the ass but you have to respect that.

Mike Watt played on one of her albums. Not sure if it's the new one or not. He gave her a thumbs up ('that gal can fuckin' sing').

Well, she's not necessarily my cup o tea but I do have to re-think my anti-American Idol tirades I've been known to go on. Usually my take is that singers are just shot up to the top of the charts with Idol, short circuiting years of climbing up to the top and the attendant acquisition of all the professional, personal, and protective skills along the way...as well as the pitfalls. Bands who fight their way up to the top, playing in shitholes, etc, do develop a certain grit and honing of thier craft while playing for 6 punters, etc. but it's easy, on the other hand, to fetishize that route as the only legit way to the top and it carries with it all sorts of problematic assumptions like that of the tortured artiste, authenticity of the ole 'bootstraps' ideology, etc.

On the other hand, in the new age of Idol-ization, that kind of instant-fame has usually been preceded by years of struggle of their own to get there, as well plenty of its own, perhaps hidden, costs. Kelly has faced pressure about her image and weight and subsequent eating disrder battle (LOL she's beautiful and looks great to me), and that rocket ride to the top comes with cruelties all their own, especially for a young girl...She looked like she was having fun, she belted out a few I enjoyed watching, she worked the crowd a lil, I thought the drummer was having a blast, to boot...

Dunno really, but I try to temper my crankiness with the particularities of each case...

PS: Madonna has always been A#1 Cool in my book! She's one tough biatch!

I fell in love with Madonna when she got William Orbit to produce Ray of Light.
