Best Sting Solo Songs the Police Could Cover?

Best Sting Solo Songs the Police Could Cover?

Postby David Herbert on 03 Jul 2007 04:38

Alright. Sting's solo work: Which songs would be well suited to be played live on the current Police tour?
A few off the top of my head:
1. Fortress Around Your Heart (Blue Turtles).
2. Englishman in New York (Nothing Like the Sun).
3. Be Still My Beating Heart (Nothing Like the Sun).

I am HUGE Sting solo fan but I do not wish to hear any Sting songs on this tour. :D And they made clear none would be heard.

It's THE POLICE!

I can wait until he goes back on his own.

I certainly wouldn't want any Police songs pushed aside by a Sting song. I am just curious. I was imagining that the band had stayed together. If the band had stayed together then they might have gone on to record some of the songs from Sting's solo career. I was trying to think of songs that would be well suited to Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers playing.
Frankly I think the first two Sting solo albums were pretty good. Great songs, great performances, great players. I didn't care much for "Soul Cages" and after.
I think Stewart and Andy could have given some of Sting's solo stuff a good work over.

I think you make a good point, David. However, consider this: those songs would likely sound completely different had Stewart and Andy had any input.

I don't mean this as negatively as it may sound, but my guess is they're probably more interested in doing their collaborative material as well as possible, than in having this tour be even more of the Sting Show than it already is.

Not sure if we all want to forget - but all the tours from 1977 to 1983 were pretty much Sting Shows. The Reunion Tour is probably the first one that has a touch of democracy in the band, on the stage at least - pretty much because Sting is under pressure to let his buddies shine as well ...
The Police was never as pure as they are this year - and that is why I always go crazy if people start to complain too much ...
What you see is what you get and that is why 2007 is truely a gift to the fans.
Sting songs? Fuck off ... ! Weasel that is ...

I gotta tell you, phat - they were just stellar tonight. People keep asking me which show out of the six I've seen was the best....I can tell them honestly that every show has been better than the one before.

At the rate they're going, we'll all be assumed bodily into heaven before this year is out! (I just looked at your blog, by the way...I'm on a terribly slow connection or I'd find that website that translates URLs to and from various languages...I look forward to being able to read it. ;))

Well the blog has nothing new - but I think about to turn it into a "Stalking The Police Blog" as soon as they hit Europe. Other then that you only find half naked Mountainbike Girls and Beer on it ...
Is today "Fuck you Weasel"-Day or was that yesterday?

Um, guys? Not to rain on the parade, but I'm forever logging onto TPT and not getting some in-joke that's gone on for weeks. Could we please make sure that any folks new to the forum don't feel left out before much more time goes on with the weasel jokes? Thanks for your consideration. -DotD

I would consider "Lazarus Heart" to be ALMOST a Police song. Hell, it has Andy all over it and Stewart would definitely treat it differently than Manu.

That being said, no Sting songs done on this tour. Police only. End of story.

I saw the tour in Vancouver and wasn't the least bit disappointed that they didn't play any Sting solo material. I am not lobbying for inclusion of said material. I am just trying to imagine how the songs would have sounded with Stewart and Andy.
Fortress Around Your Heart: Even more powerful than the Blue Turtles version. Closer to the energy of Synchronicity 2. It's already great and sounds pretty close to what I imagine Stewart and Andy would play. One of the best Sting solo songs. The production values haven't aged well, sounds too fake reverby on the drums.
Englishman In New York: Would benefit from Stewart's energy. A little more guts in the percussion. A tasteful Andy melody instead of the horn lead would also be welcome.
Be Still My Beating Heart: I picture this one with slightly sparser percussion, with the fills being louder, more dramatic.
Just to put it on record, I think these are all good songs and my opinions and ideas are tendered with respect. The players on those tracks are some of the finest in the world.

'Something The Boy Said', 'A Thousand Years', 'Jeremiah Blues', 'Inside', 'Lazarus Heart' and a fitting end to the last gig....'consider Me Gone'
