Hey folks, this issue is cropping up a lot. Here's how you add a fun picture to your user profile over at the left side, there....

1.) Pick your photo. It should be a common format like .jpg or .gif. Save it to your desktop or somewhere you'll remember where to find it.

2.) Upload it to a free image hosting site like imageshack.us, or photobucket.com. Imageshack will allow you to resize the image as you upload it. A good size is about 200 pixels by 200. A larger photo is a little jarring for other users, and a really large one will mean the posts on any thread you're in will condense to only a few characters before they start to scroll.

3.) There should be a line labeled something like "direct link to image." Copy that url to your clipboard.

4.) Hit the "Profile" link up at the top of the page here at SC.net. Near the bottom you'll see "Link to Off Site Avatar." Paste your "direct link to image" link in that box. Hit "submit".

Have fun! Others here can tell you how to upload an animated .gif, or how to make your own image.

Good info. This should be stickied somewhere, since most of this board's functionality has been disabled...

I must be a total dolt! I have images that are the right size on my hard drive- doesn't seem to show up right!

I use photobucket and the forum site says it must be a jpeg- and it is indeed a jpeg

Maybe having technical difficulties-will try later-apologize for being furtive in advance!

Give us a little more detail, tobin. When you go to imageshack.us or photobucket.com to upload, what is the exact error message?

Someone here ought to be able to help.

thanks- sorry was expecting it to be easier- like skype.
I tried using the image off your hard drive option- that didn't work at all!
but that is better- thanks for offering to help though. I wouldn't be much of a geek if I couldn't get it to work!
:)
