Help me out?

I'm finally going to get a record player.

Anyone know a nice one that is relativley inexpensive that would hook up to my stereo?
How do you clean a record (I have tons, I'm sure they need to be cleaned first)?
Do 45's need a, like, mini record player?
What else do I need to know?

sounds a bit obvious but a vinyl nerd friend of mine says ebay is the place.

loads of people selling real nice record turntables for next to nothing apparantly.

I still have my record player from thirty years ago and still goes fine. Still use it. Here in Australia you can pick them up for about $100 dollars brand new. If I am not mistaken most record players have different setting for singles and albums. Mine has three settings but I am sure they only carry the two settings now. The biggest problem I found was finding the needles.

They are on the come back.

I would just ring around and compare prices. I am going by what is in Australia.

There was big trend of going back to records. That all I can add. I have seen them around in past couple of years.

When I bought mine new back in 1988 for $100, the salesman told me to watch for a few things when buying a turntable. First, he said don't get one that is belt driven as they wear out too fast and he said to get one that uses cartridge needles. i still use mine to encode stuff all the time. If you want to digitize anything, be sure to get the Griffith iMic. I've seen them for clearance at Radio Shack recently for less than $10.00. They should be with all the iPod stuff.

I bought a DJ- style turntable at Guitar Center a couple years ago for around $150...it's great and came with its own case, so you can unplug and store if need be.

I've also got an RCA turntable I bought back in the 80s. Believe it or not it's a belt drive, but still runs fine.

You might need a preamp if you're going to do a lot of digitizing vinyl. It'll mean you can record at the right levels without having to go back through and modulate the sound frequency, which is a PITA unless you have a fast computer with a lot of RAM.

I have an M-Audio preamp, also sold at Guitar Center and other fine retailers...it was around $120 IIRC.

Those things are nearly impossible to find. I was going to buy one for Hub for Xmas a few years back...thus my preamp idea. Let me know if you get your hands on one.

They run about $150 with shipping, I'm going to see if we can find one local first.

When I finally get one I'm going to get the Klark Kent records, and mp3 them.
