The Police's choice of instruments and sounds

The Police's choice of instruments and sounds

Postby kinetickid on 17 Apr 2007 03:21

To all who might be asking themselves the following,

The few things i am wondering about the upcoming tour is the choice of gear that the band will be using on the tour.

1. If Sting will use an electric upright or fretless on some some songs like he use to, i really would love to see that again.

2. I am guessing that Sting won't play with a pick anymore, though i think the "pick" sound suits the Police songs better and gives them a bit more attack, depending on the songs of course.

3. We all know Andy is going to be using his classic Tele, but will he be disregarding his Roland and Hamer guitars for other Police songs?

4. Stewart is probably not going to use effects on his drums or octobans.
Xylophone on "King of Pain" was amazing ... Will this come back?

Well OK, i know i am concerned about these things, but i grew up seeing these cool things in Police gigs. I will admit that i am a bit nostalgic for vintage sounds in the Police and will not be expecting these things. Just wanted to share this with you guys.

Cheers

Mike

I have a feeling it will be very bare bones, just like The Whiskey. I don't think there will be many effects on Stewart's drums- he doesn't need them and has proved it time and time again! I don't want to see a huge percussion rack behind him cause I want to see him wail away on the kit!!!

I'd love to see Sting play some upright, and Andy of course can have the world of effects at his feet. :)

Who knows? Too early to think about that, IMHO.

If you check out the Paiste site and go to Stewart's cymbal setup, you'll see that it's changed yet again. He's incorporating some more percussive sounds like a cup chime and flanger splash, as well as louder crashes and 12" hi-hats(!)

He's using his trusty old green ride cymbal, of course, but it sure doesn't look like it from the photo. The ride in the pic looks more like a signature dark dry ride, or maybe some prototype? Perhaps one of the New Signature Mark II rides? Anyway, it ain't green.

I think he was using some at the Whisky, and I suspect he will on tour. It's pretty integral to what he does on some of the songs (Walking on the Moon, for example).

I think the special effects could make music sounds cool!

strewart's marimba/xylophone is evident in the picture of the rehearsal space that he posted some time ago on teh homepage of this site. this was discussed.

c'mon, we cant lock our boys up in a little box and expect them to do everything exactly as they did back in the day

if you want that, listen to bootlegs

Amen to that.

I expect that The Boys are working hard to balance the vintage with the modern. And I cannot wait to see what they come up with. Yay.
Dramatic highlights & a unique musical cosmos. Guaranteed.

Sting is playing one of his two Taurus pedals again, and with 2 vintage Ampeg, like in those early days !

And Stewart is using drums and cymbals, just like the early days!

I would like to thank all of you for your opinions.

I will be very happy just to see these guys play together again and enjoying themselves on stage. That is only thing i am really looking forward to.

The rest are just details that they are keeping top secret for now. Even Stewart is keeping it hush from the forum for now, as i am sure it's part of the "plan" for surprises.
