Alright...I transcribed his whole response here because this is very, very interesting--

ANDY: One of the things we're doing in the rehearsals, and we've never really done this before, but it's proving to be a very 'fertile ground' is that every night after dinner, after the whole afternoon of playing with the electric guitars and the drums and everything, we've been doing these acoustic-- couple hours of acoustic guitar-- just two steel string guitars and Stewart plays bass, and they're amazing...I mean God...I mean we're really going somewhere that we never went. It's very interesting.

INTERVIEWER (dumb joke): So you've already got sort of a 'side project' going?

ANDY: It's a sort of a side project that's very rich and I think Sting is even somewhat staggered by it, like...oh my God...there's this whole other dimension that we've found playing together that we never touched upon.

Man, the suprise in Andy's voice in that spot. Wow.

He also talks about that infamous picture taken of the three of them in a bar at Sundance, how they weren't a band at the time but that they *looked* like one, that he thinks that that night is greatly responsible for sparking the reunion idea.

Thanks for the link, Landlord, and the transcribe, W&S.

Wow, I wonder if we'll hear any of this on tour. That would be wild.
We're so used to their traditional roles. I saw the video for "Don't Box Me In" on Youtube the other day. Stewart was playing a bass.
Now that I think of it, I'd be disappointed if we didn't hear some of this.

This article is about comments he made on the same night this interview was done:

The Police hint at new album
Trio also line up new material for world tour
05.Apr.07 2:29pm

The Police's guitarist Andy Summers has hinted that the band may get to work on a new album after their forthcoming world tour.

The star, who attended a book signing and Q&A session for his memoirs 'One Train Later' in London yesterday (April 4), said the reformed three-piece would consider making a new album after their world tour.

He added: "If we do well with these concerts we may well make a sixth album. I can't see why not."

The guitarist also revealed that the trio will be debuting some new material at their forthcoming tour, which kicks off in Vancouver on May 28 before heading to Europe in August.

"We've been jamming acoustically lately and we've been really enjoying it," said Summers. "We'll be playing a couple of new songs at the shows in the summer."

Dates for The Police's world tour sold out within an hour of going on sale in the UK and were snapped up within minutes in the US.

"I was shocked I had to admit. I thought we'd do alright on ticket sales but I never expected such a high demand," said Summers. "We were booked to play arenas on many of the dates but we ended up having to upgrade to stadiums. It's pretty daunting I have to admit."

I doubt they'll be going acoustic on stage...it seems far more likely what he's talking about is them sitting around coming up with new ideas-- i.e. new songs, and/or new ways of playing old songs. Probably more the former than the latter, which is why he's hinting at the possibility of a new album.

One thing I've definitely observed about these guys is that they never say anything by accident. They're very savvy about their public comments, so where there's smoke, there's usually fire.

Maybe they could do an Unplugged or VH1 Storytellers Acoustic special concert. And hopefully some of us could win tickets to go watch it person.

They may want to fan the fire and peak our interest with a little taste at the shows. Who knows what incredible stuff these guys could come up with?

What I'm saying is...I don't think they're using acoustics because they plan on doing a bunch of acoustic stuff. Acoustics are just the easiest way to sit around on the couch or whatever and play in a relaxed atmosphere. I think they're using them to come up with new ideas--and I think what Andy means by saying it's something they haven't done before is that they always used to go off by themselves, write a song, and then bring it back to the others and say "here's my song, what do you think of it" as opposed to doing it together.

That's what it sounds like to me, anyway.

Oooooooooh! That makes sense. Well, if that's the case, that's a good sign that the boys are playing nicely (in the behaviorial sense).
Collaboration's a good thing!
