!!!! This summer is starting to get so good it's just comical. In addition to tix I've got to see most of my favorite artists, I just found out Iggy & the Stooges are playing the Memphis in May concert - along with a slew of other great acts.

Some of youse guys from out of town may want to join me for this one. It'll be outtasite. (And that's my birthday weekend...looks like I won't have much time to get all depressed over being another year older.

ok, scuse the all caps but THIS IS GETING F'IN RIDICULOUS!!! I'm already into 2008 food budget at this point LOL...playing on garbage can lids for cymbals just about until year 2009...hope cats don't need to go to the vet, or me for that matter...<looks around the house, what can I sell...what can I sell?> Hubby freaked when he saw the lineup...at least I have a partner in budgetary crime

Heh. Yeah, it's good & bad to be married to another huge music fan.
We had to convert the largest closet in our house into a CD room. Neither hub nor I can ever seem to resist buying stuff...plus we have CDs & DVDs stacked on every flat surface, it seems...our hotel bills are going to be awful this year from going to see so many concerts.
At least I've always got someone turning me onto new (good) stuff! And nobody ever seems to nag me about spending too much money on music (only shoes and handbags).

LOL evidently hubby is a fan of something called 'health' as well...I've been sick as a dog for 2 days and I couldn't stand being inert anymore so I hoped on the kit for a while and I suppose he heard me drop my sticks about 4 times or so in five minute, went in there and dragged me out...now I'm grounded to the couch again
Re: music everywhere, add to it the fact that hubby and I are both academics so in addition to the cds, dvds, drum crap all over we have thousands upon thousands of books as well...have just resigned myself to stacking things on the floor & not caring about how it looks <giggle>
Anyhoo...do you have any recommendations for cheap places to stay in Memphis?...maybe starting from a budget would be the best way to convince hubby its feasible...preparing powerpoint presentation atm, with imbedded charts since...well...have nothing better to do from couch while watching An Inconvenient Truth <grin>

Go Al! But I'm really trying to keep my cheerleading off the board...reasonable people can disagree.
I'm looking for Memphis hotels now. Looks like most of the good downtown ones are sold out, but there are plenty left in west Memph and Germantown.
You want to be way careful where you book a hotel in Memphis. Parts of it are dangerous, even in broad daylight. But then, that's true of any city.

There's a Hampton Inn at 1180 Union Ave in Memphis. It's close to Beale Street, Sun Records and Staxx. I stayed there last year and would recommend it.

Thanks for the tip...I'm sure its a good place to stay, & looks like the word is out since its all booked up for that weekend! It would probably take an IRS tax return miracle to be able to go...but I'm looking for a place to make a reservation in case <giggle>

Iggy and the Stooges? Never heard of them. Think I'd like 'em?

Might be a little, er, dischordant for your tastes. But if you decide to go for it, the album "Fun House" is considered a modern classic by many.

Best I can do is point to movies where you may've heard them:if you've seen Trainspotting you would have heard "Lust for Life" in the opening when Renton is hauling buns...or if you've seen Lock Stock then when Eddie loses the card game staggering away to tell his mates to good news you hear "I wanna be your Dog" both Iggy Pop (second with Stooges) songs...that's all I can think of off hand and if I am remembering correctly?

REM played "Be Your Dog" on the Rock Hall of Fame inductions this year...plus there was a v. popular version of "Passenger" by Siouxsie a few years back.

And there's that song he did with Kate Pierson from the B-52's. I think it's called Candy.
