Hey folks, Ian was about the third person in the "In Memoriam" series on the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame induction tonight. It was about two minutes into the program, after Jann Wenner's eulogy for Ahmet Ertegun.
(I got it on Tivo, but we got the high-def kind that won't let you download shows to your Mac or burn copies...$%^&!)

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OK, so REM came out to be inducted, and Mike Mills just gave a HUGE shoutout to Ian Copeland!!! Like, the one person he thanked besides his mother - "the big brother he never had"....
And this right after Eddie Vedder (confirmed Friend o' Stewart) introduced the band...
Man...wherever Ian is tonight, he must be proud.
I'm going to get this on the other Tivo so I can YouTube it for you guys ASAP. For real.
Update: Stipe thanks Miles! And gives, at the very end, a dramatic "special thanks" to Ian!!!! (And someone named Karen Burke)...
MAN do I wish you all could see this!!
(I met Michael Stipe in 2004 thanks to some political work I was doing at the time, and he's awesome. Total lack of pretense, just as intelligent and cool as you suspected...)
that is so cool

How Awesome is that. I hope I can see it...someone get it on here so we can see please. Family is downstairs watching Deal or No Deal..all I care is that I will win the 30 K...crossing fingers.
Seriously, though. very neat.
Go Police and Ian... we miss you.

REM performs Iggy Pop song with Patti Smith - after Iggy gets passed over for the Rock Hall this year!!!
Oh man!!!!! This is as good as Prince channeling Jimi Hendrix on the cover of "While my Guitar Gently Weeps" the year the Beatles got in...I kid you not. And it totally works, since REM was famously influenced by all this stuff.
And there's Scott McCaughey, who I also met in '04...what a great dude...I have a photo with him somewhere...
Now they're doing the obligatory "everyone on stage for the last song" medley...and it's a real trip. Eddie Vedder, Sammy Hagar, Ronnie Spector and Patti Smith...plus Keith Richards, who tonight has given me a whole new appreciation for Johnny Depp's rendition of him in the pirate movie...

Thanks for the play-by-play, Divemistress. I love love love REM and was really sad to not be able to see the telecast. It's really sweet to hear about all the love for the Copeland familia.

Hopefully they'll rerun it later this week...I'll make sure to check it out and record it myself if they do!

Very cool. Thanks for all the updates! I work nights so I missed it. VH1, MTV and all the other music channels repeat their programs incessantly. So just search your DVR, Tivos and I'm sure it will pop up. I am going to do that right now.

I think they also said 8 pm this Friday you could catch it again!
The love for Ian was manifest...Eddie Vedder's speech, endearing, REM rocks the place off and it was just like IRS years with Bill Berry back behind the kit...
I had never seen the clip from George Harrison's induction to the HoF before tonight...umm if anyone ever was not completely sure that Prince f'in rocks...its a must see...Dive's comment 'channeling Hendrix', ya that
...I said the same thing to hubby while I was watching it...and Dhani Harrison looks so much like his pop you think you are hallucinating...
One question: has GMF found the elixir of youth?..I mean he looks like he's in his 20s...I was so happy to see him at the tables but I could not believe it!!
I missed like the first half...need to see Patty Smith...I want to rock like that at 65 $$

Yeah, it was great to see it live. Usually they tape it and edit the hell out of it and broadcast it a week later.
I was glad Mike Mills and Michael Stipe both mentioned Leroy. Leroy forever!
It was nice they thanked Miles, Jay Boberg and the staff at IRS also. Those albums tend to get lost in the fray over the WB albums but those 5 IRS albums were the best, and Miles should get credit for that. I've loved REM since they were the best kept secret in music. I can't believe I'm old enough for my favorite bands to be inducted. Sheesh.
It was a shame Van Halen couldn't suck it up to show up and play together. They've always been one of my favorite bands. They could have blown the roof off that place!

It was a real shame about VH...made me sad
