Which drum set up do you guys prefer?

Stewart's kit of recent years still has four Toms, only two up and two down instead of the original Police days of three up and one down. I modeled my set up after him (of course!) and have tried switching it, but I really love the three up option. If anything I'd add a second floor tom. I already have a set of rototoms above the hihats that double as extra 5,6,7 toms and my cheap version of OctoBans.

So what do you guys like? Obviously Stewart has it this way for personal preferences now, which makes me wonder what they are? Do you like his old set up or the new one?

You forgot the tom on the left. I'm a 5-piece guy myself (2 rack, 1 floor & snare), so I miss his first kit - the 5-piece in Royal Blue.

If you've noticed, the configuration and sizes of his drums has depended on the gig. For Orchestrali, he used deeper shells (10x9, 12x10 & the 13 on the left). For the R&R Hall of Fame, it was just a 13x9 and the two floor toms. Now from the photo, it looks like he's back to two racks, two floors and one on the left.

What is interesting is that he's gone with all low-pitch Octobans in recent years. In the past, he always had two low and two high.

It's no secret that in many interviews, Stewart has stated his preference for fewer toms in front. That way, he can scoot the hats in a bit closer. However, one has to admire is pragmatism and flexability when playing in diverse musical environments.

maybe he should have some roland v drum pads instead of the simmons pads of old.

I prefer the standard five piece: two rack and one floor, though I will very often go with one rack and one floor if I think that's all the gig calls for. I don't think the live listener gets much more out of having the additional toms, though it does do something for the visual aspect of the show. In a live setting I use the cymbals to add more colors (they cut through the mix better) and with fewer toms people can actually see me playing back there.

As far as what Stewart does, I hope that he has all of his usual "bells and whistles" for the upcoming tour. He makes use of octabans and bells like no one else. He's a phenomenon.

Yes, Stewart is using a double pedal, although I've yet to hear him do anything earcatching with it - a double stroke ruff here and there.

I also prefer to use cymbals for color. If I could, I'd use nothing but cymbals. I am a cymbalholic.

I prefer a small kit ( kik, snr,10' tom, 14' flr tom) and of course two Tama Octobans and about five cymbals with splashes.

...but that's mainly because I am not rich and smaller means less to carry.

I have an old Tama (swingstar) set up much like Stew's circa 80. Three toms across the top, on on the floor, ride and three cymbals on the right, one cymbal left. also two octobans and a piccolo snare on the left. in the process of buy a new kit currently, dont think i am staying with tama though.
