It's in the links section too.

Snatched the link from Stingus.

Who pays to see an artist, get's front row... then spits on them?

Was anyone there when this happened? What did they do with the spitter?

And yes, I found it funny.

Dudes. This is from Frejus, France 1980 I am pretty sure. Same concert as the Urgh a Music war was filmed at.

Sting says "The cunt that threw the mud at me, I'd like to rip his fuckin arms off." Then later they find the guy and Sting says "Save him for me!" Then Sting himself goes and taps the guy on the head with his bass headstock and spits on him. It's from the Police Around the World video I am pretty sure.

If you watch Stewart's footage of him filming himself and playing with one hand, that's from the same moment. Stew says "Here we are, somewhere in the middle of a Police concert. There's a bit of a fight goin on!"

cpriddims:

it is Frejus 28.08.1980 - and as the concert the day before was postponed because of the rain there was a lot of mud around to throw...

but it's not the same gig as the Stewart moment in EVERYONE STARES.

different songs, different shirts

Stewart's bit is probably from one of the two Hammersmith gigs in September 1979. There are lots of other Super8 bits from this gig in his film.

And it's Sting himself who sings background for himself. THE POLICE went in the studio and worked on their original live recordings. That's why you also can hear horns on WHEN THE WORLD... in Around The World, although recorded way before the Ghost recordings...

I have this Frejus show on CD, from audience. And you can hear the fight from inside.
It's in french, and funny.

Yep, and I think the overdubs for "Around The World" were recorded in Nice, France in 1981 (don't have the correct date...)

Yes, and if you have Urgh! A Music War, you'll see a lot of people on stage in Frejus, joining The Police during "So Lonely" (UB40, Jools Holland, Skafish).
So the version of "So Lonely" in Everyone Stares is definitely not from the Frejus concert !
Dietmar is right, probably september 1979 or later the same year...

Duh! I should have remembered that. Sorry guys!

Like I really thought that Frejus was the only night Sting got pissed off on stage!

Soooo..

What was the Hammersmith fight about during SO Lonely? Anyone?

Sting was quite often pissed off on stage, when something wrong happened in the audience.
If you're a bootlegger, remember Dublin July 27, 1980 when someone in the audience threw a bottle on Stewart's drumkit !
The music stopped, of course, and Sting did a long monologue to lecture the crowd. But the sound quality of this bootleg is awful, and I can't reach a word, except "Fuck Off".

About "So Lonely" there is a misunderstanding. The version in ES is not the same as the one in O To S (no trouble in the audience and no Sting yelling). And nothing is really sure about the place in ES...
Dietmar thinks it's in Hammersmith in september.
The fight was about a kid probably playing with fire, as Sting said "hey, that's a fucking fire risk !!!" (ES chapter 7, 24'18")

There was 3 Hammersmith Odeon gigs late 79, two in Sept. 22 & 23 and one in Dec. 18 + one in Hammersmith Palais the same night.
"So Lonely" in O To S. was shot in Hammersmith (Odeon or Palais ?) in Dec. 18, for sure...
A little bit confusing, mmh ?
