From Roger Friedman of Fox News:
"But when CBS' live signal goes to the Staples Center on Feb. 11, director Ken Ehrlich will have scored a coup: The Police will appear and sing most likely one of three songs: "Every Breath You Take," "Message in a Bottle" or "Roxanne."

And — surprise of surprises — this should guarantee an announcement forthcoming of a huge North American tour, followed by dates in Europe, all beginning in late spring. But the group will not, I repeat will not, appear at either the Coachella or Glastonbury festivals. There have been rumors to that effect, but my sources say they are untrue."

Oh boy. EBYT. Why am I not surprised...

I notice they didn't rule out Bonnaroo.

That said, I looked into the VIP package last night and it was...get this...US$1000 for two passes. Whoosh. You could both buy plane tix and stay in the best hotel in NYC for a night or two for that kind of coin. (Although our London buddies could still come, thanks to the exchange rate. regular Bonnaroo is "only" US$150 for three days, and honestly it's kind of worth it; but then you're out on the grounds with 90,000 people and it's *really* hard to see.) :(

I'm actually really glad they ruled out Glastonbury, as I understand tickets generally go on sale and sell out before they ever announce their itinerary.

My nightmare was that they might have Glastonbury be their only "special appearance" and it would be impossible to get tickets.

god, I hope it's not EBYT. They need to start with a more rockin' song, like Message in a Bottle, Synchronicity I, Spirits in a Material World, Next to You or Fallout. EBYT would only work for me if it were in the middle of the show. If they're opening the broadcast, it wouldn't be my first choice.

I can just hear the show producer now, he's Mr. Hollywood:

"come on fellas, it's the HIT! The sure song! Remember the Biggie cover!"

Sigh. I bet it *is* the "hit", for the typical Grammy viewer...the song everyone remembers, even those who never bought a Police record in their lives.

Unfortunately, I think you're absolutely right! Unless they decide to play Roxanne? It could be a good compromise: a classic song everyone knows, not too slow, not too fast... Sure, probably not as bankable as EBYT.

You know I would be really suprised if they played any festival-type concerts like Bonaroo. Jut doesnt seem like their type of thing. When one of the biggest bands on the planet gets back together, I cant see them being just another band on a crowded bill. For DM's sake I hope I am wrong though :)

As far as the Grammys, I would not be surprised if it was EBYT, didnt that win a grammy? I would much prefer something else, MIAB or Roxanne even.

I'd lay heavy bets on "Roxanne", myself; after all, that's the song all of this 30th Anniversary stuff is supposed to be celebrating, right?

I'd prefer MIAB, or really anything *but* EBYT, but we'll just have to wait and see.

Reason I keep mentioning Bonnaroo is that I've read several interviews with Stewart where he indicated he really enjoyed playing there with Oysterhead. I'm certainly not married to the idea, and if I go myself I'll also absolutely go to another venue where I might actually be able to see.

If they don't play a festival, you think they'll have a "name" opening band?(for the most part, I'm too young to remember any details about Police touring firsthand...didn't even have a drivers license till after they broke up. d'oh!)

A thousand for two passes? Hmm... if the Police are there, I might do it.

For the record, you can fly to Nashville for cheap - Southwest flies here - and lodging probably won't be a fortune by East or West Coast standards, either.

I've heard those VIP passes are worth it, but I'm having trouble hunting down details. Better parking passes and campground, but what I want to know is, how close can you get to the stage...?

It'll be moot if the guys don't play 'Roo, but I figure I may as well post whatever I find out, since apparently 'Roo is here to stay and I'm looking anyway.

I say they're gonna come out with Fists of Fury - "Message" all the way. By the time Stew hits his 8th snare shot, that crowd's gonna be on its chairs. :D
