Interesting, seeing how it's a re-shuffled track order.

1. I Burn for You was originally intended for GITM? I had no idea. Such a great song. Anyone know why it didn’t make the final LP?
2. I’m embarrassed to admit that I didn’t know until today that Rehumanize Yourself was co written by STEWART.
3. Not a fan of Once Upon a Daydream. Had some potential but didn’t stick the landing

Shit. STEWART counting in at the start of four of the tracks? Damn it. Now I’m gonna have to buy it.

The ghastly A Kind Of Loving from Brimstone & Treacle was recorded around this same time frame. I wonder why it wasn't included. Surely there's a mix of it without the girl screaming all the way through it. That version would be a nice jam.

Ghost In The Machine, The Police's fourth album which was first released in 1981, is to be reissued as a stunning limited edition picture disc, featuring the alternate, 'original' track-listing and sequencing.

To be released on November 4 and now available on pre-order, this special reissue features three additional tracks not included on the original album - "I Burn For You" - the single mix of the track from the "Brimstone and Treacle" album - "Once Upon A Daydream" and "Shambelle."

To add to the unique nature of this release, and reflecting the personality of the band, four songs ("Spirits In The Material World," "Rehumanize Yourself," "One World (Not Three)" and "Hungry For You") feature Stewart Copeland counting in the tracks - distinctive audio from the recording studio that was not included on the 1981 release.

The discs' side A design features the logo image from the front sleeve and side B features the inner sleeve image. Recorded at AIR Studios, Montserrat and Le Studio, Quebec, Ghost In The Machine was No. 1 on the U.K. album chart, No. 2 on the Billboard 200, and a multi-platinum best seller all over the world in which the bands' jazz influences became more pronounced but still retained the sophisticated pop appeal for which the band had become known.

The original release featured three hit singles - "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic," "Invisible Sun" and "Spirits in the Material World." Other highlights also include the rollicking "Demolition Man" (later covered by Grace Jones), the frantic "Rehumanize Yourself," and the ballads "Secret Journey" and "Darkness."

Tracklisting

Side A:
Invisible Sun
Demolition Man
Secret Journey
Darkness
Spirits In The Material World
Too Much Information
Omegaman

Side B:
One World (Not Three)
Rehumanize Yourself
I Burn For You
Hungry For You (j'aurais toujours faim de toi)
Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic
Once Upon A Daydream
Shambelle

1. Maybe to drive sales of the "Brimstone and Treacle" soundtrack...maybe because they didn't want it appearing on two releases...maybe Stewart thought Sting had enough tracks on GITM? lol My personal feeling is that it should close this release, as it closes the B&T soundtrack. It just fits well as a bookend track.

2. I am surprised you didn't. The verse structure really sound like Stewart's writing, though I could see how you could make a case for Sting's as well. I wonder just how that song creative process went.

3. I agree. It didn't need to be placed on this. It always was meant to be a B-side, and a poor one at that. Feels like it was half-cooked, or maybe rushed out to fill a need for a B-side during the rush of Synch single releases.

RIGHT?? Which just reinforces the fact that there's STILL fun stuff begging to be released to us Nutters. Crossing fingers for the Regatta re-re-re-release...

This reminds me of the pre-release version of Genesis' "Abacab" (available as an unauthorized release), which has count ins on most of the tracks (both verbal and musical) that were removed before the official release. It's not much, but I do like the intros there.

A hot take from me is that all Police albums have the correct track order on CD (aside from No Time This Time belonging at the end of Outlandos). So this alternate order is just all kinds of wrong. And Once Upon a Daydream is just too grim for any record, very fitting it was included on none of them.

P.S. The fate of the man from Once Upon a Daydream is just wrong. That bastard of a father killed an unborn baby!

Got my notification that my vinyl has shipped! Crossing fingers it doesn't arrive damaged, it seems like shippers still haven't come up with a reliable way to protect items like this.

I know of one record company that has the option of opening sealed vinyl and seperating the record from the jacket before shipment, in order to eliminate spine splits.

"A Kind Of Loving" and "How Stupid Mr. Bates" were recorded half a year after "Ghost In The Machine" was recorded (January 28, 1982), so they wouldn't really belong on that record...

One song that WOULD be appropriate would be "Love Lessons", which The Police did record during the "Ghost..." sessions - although it was probably abandoned at a very early production stage. As much as I like it it doesn't really fit onto the record. "Once Upon A Daydream" does fit timewise... and I like that song, as I have very special memories as hearing it on the radio out of the blue without knowing anything about it !! What a Police surprise that was back then !

The counting in is a nice bonus, although the novelty is over in mere seconds. The movie version of "I Burn For You" is cool, but I'd say it's not really The Police, but probably just Sting with Andy Summers... (from memory). Extended "Invisible Sun", also nice, but nothing really NEW. Everything was out there in some form...

The real cool bonus would have been the rough mixes of "Love Lessons" and "I'm So Tired" (which became Omegaman). Or the various versions of "Every Little Thing..." that they tried until they agreed to just play their stuff along the demo.

Most of the tracks have a little extra something:

Invisible Sun has extra Sting vocals over the outro, similar to the video version.
Secret Journey's fade out is a tad longer
A few extra seconds of hi-hat in the intro to ELTSDIM
The intro to Omegaman has a couple of seconds of guitar noise right before Andy kicks in the riff

Just a follow-up, way too much surface noise on this vinyl release for my taste. I have a decent turntable setup and I would have infinitely preferred a 180+ gram solid vinyl release than this picture vinyl version, including leaving off a track on each side to provide more mass for the groove sides.

For those without turntables, this release is now available on Apple Music as the GITM Alternate Sequence Edition. That being said, I want to comment that the extra hi hats at the start of Shambelle may be my favorite addition. However, I gotta tell you that I HATE this version of I Burn For You, for obvious reasons.
