Sting May Be Reuniting With The Police

It’s looking more certain than ever that Sting is about to reunite with his original band, The Police.
The signs are strong, with enough clues available so that even Colonel Mustard could figure it out. Here’s one: Yesterday, former Policemen Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland were guests, with their families, at a Malibu birthday party for Sting’s better half, Trudie Styler. Their appearance caused quite a stir.
And on Thursday night at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, Sting dedicated a lute version of “Message in a Bottle” to the pair of former comrades who happened to be seated in the auditorium.
Further investigation: Although Sting and his camp remain mum on the subject, sources do tell me that the Police will reunite this summer to celebrate their 30th anniversary.
Such a tour makes sense for everyone, since a reunited Police would probably mean sold-out stadiums and arenas around the world. An announcement could come at any time.
And think of it: With U2 and the Rolling Stones having exhausted their audiences by now, the Police would have a clear shot this summer for record-breaking box-office numbers.
The Police only recorded five albums before breaking up in 1982, but their greatest hits remain radio staples a quarter century later. Since then, Sting has gone on to have an unparalleled hit solo career, while Summers and Copeland have concentrated on jazz and soundtrack composing.
Still, the group’s songs are widely known even to a new generation. “Every Breath You Take,” “Roxanne” and “Don’t Stand So Close to Me” are known to many different age groups.
If the Police do reunite — and there’s every reason to think they will — the impetus may have come from a documentary Copeland showed last year at the Sundance Film Festival called “Everyone Stares.” Icy relations among the three thawed when Sting attended a screening of the film.
Since then, Sting released his classical album, "Songs From the Labyrinth," which held the top spot on Billboard’s classical chart for 12 weeks.
Insiders say that Sting’s former reluctance to rejoin his mates is gone now that he’s accomplished pretty much everything he could in his solo career, at least for the moment.
Meanwhile, the birthday party for Styler, a low-key event held at their home not too far from last week’s devastating Malibu fires, attracted the likes of Robert Downey Jr., Courtney Love and Larry Hagman, who owned the house before the rock-royalty couple.

Icy? I thought they looked extremely happy to see eachother at Sundance. However, on some of the pictures Stew looked kind of upset with the attention Sting was getting.

Pretty sure Stewart said Sting DIDN'T attend the premiere. I hate it when the media gets it all wrong!!

Um, L? Are you twins these days...?

I'm sure Stewart would tell us all the dish if he could. You gotta figure there are ten billion players - lawyers, agents, company reps - involved with this thing.

Yeah, Stewart's cool... he'd tell us if he could.

Not twins - I'm the hot guy from Canada and she's the hot girl from Sweden. Technically, I was here first but she's here more often so it all evens out in the end! Whew, glad I got that off my chest!

I would not be surprised at all if Trudie did not talk Gordon into doing a reunion.

From what I have read in Andy's book and other articles that Stewart and Andy got along great with Trudie immediately and they considered her just one of the guys (in a way).

I think Andy said in his book that she had wicked sense of humor and fit in nicely with the group and they all liked her immensley.

...and she cursed like a sailor! He might not have used those words, exactly, but you get the point.

And yes, Dallas, I agree about her talking him into doing it. I think she has a lot of influence with her husband.

Bella, I get that feeling too. I think Trudie has him "wrapped around her finger" so to speak.

I think she kind of wears the pants! I just finished reading Sting's book, Broken Music, and he even says that he found out long ago that it is useless to try and argue with Trudie once she has made up her mind.

She wanted a man made lake dug at his estate, Lake House. Sting did not much want to do it but Trudie won that argument :)

I think she said... "look Gordon (she calls him Gordon), you and the lads need to reunite one last time.... if nothing else.... for the fans"

Anyway... that's how I see it.

You are right... Andy did say she cursed like a sailor... she had to hold her own with those three dominant personalities and I think that is why she fit in so well....and they all respected her so much.

How cool would it have to have been at her birthday party in Malibu last week with all three of them there. I bet it was incredible.

...plus Larry Hagman and Courtney Love in attendance. Sounds like a potentially bizarre experience!

No kidding... JR Ewing? I know he used to own the house they live in there.

Courtney Love?????? Yikes, I hope they counted the silverware when she left.

Robert Downey, Jr.???? hmmm....sounds like an odd assortment for sure.

And they broke up in 1982? Great reporting...

I was going to comment about that Omaha. And I liked this little gem too...

"Icy relations among the three thawed when Sting attended a screening of the film. "

Umm yeah ok, icy relations.

A very small amount of research would have turned up that Stewart and Andy live right near one another and see each other all the time...plus Stewart had said in several of his 3000 interviews in the past year that he and Sting get along great, just that Sting did not have any interest in getting back together.

I call 'lazy journalism'...

Well, I call it the standard version of Journalism. I've been in the paper
oh about a dozen times. In none of those articles did the journalist get it 100% correct. I assume that every article has some misinformation in it.

And no offense to individuals in the field, but typically communications is the default major for the pretty but stupid.
