Neil Peart Moving Pictures - Stewart mentionned

Hi guys,

Was watching this good interview with Neil who is pretty chatty in this interview, he mentions The Police as a huge influence. The interview covers the 30th anniversary of the album "Moving Pictures" and they go track by track.

Enjoy ! :)

Saw that one a while back, but fun to watch it again. It's cool that they are both buddies now, although it's obvious that Neil is much more aware of Stewart's work than Stewart is of Neil's. I think that Stewart simply never really got into Prog Rock.

Also cool that they have both become kindly old men.

I don't think Stewart loved prog rock also, even though he's been in prog rock type bands before the Police. But Rush evolved into a more pop band later on, especially in the 80's. I am sure Stewart ackowledged Rush as being influenced by the Police, but more obvious now. Would love to hear a conversation between the two, it would be fun for sure.

That would indeed be cool. They are only a couple of months apart in age, so I'm sure there would be at least a few cool stories. Read in an interview with Stewart some years back that while he loves and respects Neil, he "sent his hit squad" to get Neil because he's tired of being everyone's "second favorite drummer after Neil Peart".

Drum wise, i think both are in 2 different ball parks in terms of style of playing and feel. Neil wanting to sound very tight and calculated, Stewart looser and never playing the same thing twice. Stewart does not strive on sounding perfect, you hear it on the albums, it's very organic. Love Neil's playing, but he will not improvise the songs as his fans are accustomed on hearing him play the same exact thing.

My 2 cents,

You are spot on, KK. They have always been two sides of the same coin IMO and elements of their styles/philosophies have creeped into my own. I like to compose a part that will not only best serve the music, but will also have staying power (a la Neil), but when I'm on my own, I just wing it and let my imagination take me where it will, like Stewart. However, I've noticed in recent years that Neil is becoming better at improvising and Stewart is more disciplined than when he was younger, probably the result of his composing (and Sting forcing him to play the same thing every night for two years).

Neil still can't swing, though ;)
