OT: Possible Bass Purchase

Need advice from bass players please...I have instruments strewn about the house for spontaneous jams when friends come over. The bass I have sucks massively and now needs work. Thinking of just purchasing another, but don't want to spend a fortune. Regardless of where I buy it, what am I looking for? Any thoughts?

I got a pretty nice Squier Jazz bass on eBay for $100.00, made in Korea and it sounds great and plays well. I also had a Squier P-bass that I got for a little over $100, but I didn't like the sound as much as the Jazz bass. I had to adjust the necks on both basses to make them play better, but that's not hard to do. There are also decent Ibanez basses available for low bucks.
