front row with The Flag

After Every Breath You Take The Police were leaving the stage. Except for Stewart, who stood behind his drums and looked at me. His stare seemed to demand something... What... oh, The Flag. I had kept it folded for a while and didn't use it much because I got caught in the excitement of seeing The Police from such a short distance. So I just grabbed the bundle and shook it grinning like an idiot without even unfolding it - which was good enough for him - he was grinning, too.

He then went to Sting's microphone and said in front of 16.000 people: "If you have any questions, ask Dietmar." That was something...

This is probably only funny to me, but at an Andy book signing I asked him who is going to play him in his movie and he said "I am!" - at the time I didn't know it was a doc-style film, I thought is was more of a bio-pic with other actors. Anyway, a funny moment I surely will never forget.

i was bearing the flag of copelandia at hyde park......during a point-off with stewart and myself, and the gathered supportive nutters around me at Hyde Park..... gordo went off-script and was saying something lovely and heartfelt to the crowd and to stewart about having lived fairly near to hyde park when he had first moved to london.... but stewart missed what gordo had been saying because he was too busy pointing at me/nutters!!!!

also at the film in london, he was signing Klark#s DOn't Care 7". i asked him to sign "Klark" on it too and he said that he hadn't ever signed 'klark' before.drunk so im not cirrecting my spelling.

being shouted at by someone to leave when hanging around out side gordo's (amazing) highgate pad when i was 15 and drunk.

That would be "waiting for the DVD to come out" and missing the entire reunion tour. What WAS I thinking (I clearly wasn't.)

But some time later I discovered the sc.net and the wonderful (weird and funny) Nutter colony here and the rest truly is history...

bahahaha!! How'd I miss *that"...

Um, probably the instant friendships I made at concerts with several people who lived hundreds - or thousands - of miles away. Just haven't had that 'friends at first sight' experience with very many people before. And the fact that the friendships are still going years later. Not 'weird' in any negative sense.

Funniest might have been the three or four people crammed into the one square of pavement in front of my seat at Red Rocks, trying to pass Sally down to Jen in the front row. Or just Sally generally.

August 20, 1982: I was 15 years old with my brother and his group of friends driving from Chicago up to Alpine Valley in Wisconsin to see the Police. We were getting close but stopped for gas and a town car/limo pulled up and out stepped Andy. I remember another fan asking him where Sting and Stewart were and he said they were flying in and that he didn't like helicopters. I just stood there and shook in my shoes. I couldn't move and couldn't talk.

Five years later I saw Andy's XYZ show at Park West Chicago and after the show my girlfriend and I were waiting inside thinking he'd come out and sign stuff. I looked outside and did a double-take to see Andy sitting up on the back seat convertible Z-28. Again I couldn't talk and the door I was trying to open was locked. I eventually calmed down and went out to say hello and have him sign my XYZ CD and a Summers Fripp postcard. The Beatles 'And Your Bird Can Sing' was on the radio in the car.

It was July 1983 and The Police were opening the Synchronicity tour in Chicago. My parents had just started letting me go to concerts that year and about 25 of us from high school went. We all LOVED the Police, we liked a bunch of bands back then but the Police were our favorites, especially mine. That concert had a flock of seagulls, ministry,Joan Jett, The Fixx, and The Police. Since there were 25 of us and it was General admission, no seats and we got there early, we got close....REAL CLOSE. Most of my friends were new wave and punk and didn't like Joan Jett at all. So we were in the front rows and she started singing "do you want to touch, do you want to touch, do you want to touch me there" and we were yellling in unison "NO!' after each refrain....soon it seemed like all Comiskey park was yellilng it with us and she was shooting us dirty looks and getting madder and madder. We, being stupid high school kids thought this to be the epitome of hilarity...at the end of her show she looked directly at us, flipped us off and said "FUCK YOU , CHICAGO!!!

WI never did understand why she was booked at a new wave concert, and even though she had several songs I actually liked, give a high school kid some peppermint schnaaps and he thinks he is the funniest thing going...

So, even though it didn't directly involve the boys, it is the best I could come up with....

I've got two. Both are kinda ot. The first time wat in Toronto during the 10ST tour. I scored front row centre. All of a sudden the guy behind me started gushing and asking this lady for an autograph. The lady was Alanna Myles, or however you spell it. She made a scene about the whole thing while I watched. I was quite amused. Then she looked at me and said, exact quote... Oh, I suppose you want an autograph too? I deadpanned and said... That depends, who are you? You should have seen her jaw hit the floor.

The second was The Police show at Red Rocks. D-A-O and I had second or third row, I forget. Elvis was playing and we flipped a coin to see who had to buy the next round of beer. I lost, so the second Elvis left the stage I went for beer, and who do I run into? Elvis drummer. He's looking right at me, so I'm like HEY! And he engages me. We chat for a few minutes, and having consumed a couple drinks I was very complimentary. Tell him how great they are, and that I saw him in Ottawa, Montreal and Buffalo the week before. As I'm saying all this, I'm thinking inside that I'm one of THOSE fans. Too complimenatary, so what do I do? Mid sentance I blurt out... But you're no Stewart Copeland! And that's when it got awkward. After what seemed like a lifetime of silence, and my face as red as a tomato I finally said, Have a great rest of the tour!!! And I was out of there like a rocket

I was there too! The Joan Jett thing was very funny. I remember cups being thrown near the stage; it looked like popcorn popping.

Standing close to Smax throughout that gig is one of the funniest and loveliest of my Police memories. In the terminology of this forum we were all getting second-hand-joy first hand. Though it was not the best of venues we were a gang of recently-found 'freinds', and it was magical. I'm ashamed to report that the collective response when we realised we'd accidentally interfered in a small way with the delivery of Sting's kind words was 'Oh Shit!', followed by helpless giggles. In our defence it had been a VERY long day.

In the 'weird' category I offer sitting in line outside Croke Park, Dublin (the most civilised GA line up in gig history) hearing the soundcheck and discussing with fellow queue members (Hello Invisible!) that Sting seemed to be going for the high notes on MIAB. It's a highlight only because we found out by text message a few minutes later that we'd been listening to Dietmar singing.
