If a Police Reunion Tour does not happen in the next 5 years, I don't think it will ever happen....

Andy Summers will be almost 70 years old and I just don't see him going on a massive tour at the age of 70. Both Sting and Stewart will be right at 60 years old.

Plus, with Andy's book and Stewart's film generating a bunch of buzz and excitement about The Police than there has been in many years. Many more fans have started thinking about The Police and how great it would be to see them again (or for the first time).

In everything that I have read... it is all contingent on Sting. Stewart and Andy said they are ready to go anytime and would jump at the chance to do a reunion.

So, if Sting doesn't decide to do this in the next five years... I just don't see it happening ever.

they just make things too complacate. It would be so easy to work together again.
imagine if something bad is genereted... thru this collaborating... it would be the first miss by sting. after so much success, they have nothing to loose at all.

the only thing is about the famus "legend", the "still intact legend"... ok it probably have mean something for the people who where 16 at that time. But now things have evoluated in the music buiseness, and some tru fans are too young to ever have get a chance to see them on sceen. The police is like hendrix or led zep or some other master musicians, part of the "big dictionary of rock music". Theire catalogue is part of musics archive.

Now, they can relax about that "legend". The legend is for ever intact. Time is over now. They can simply have a nice dinner for xmas, drink some french wine (STEWART: french wine is the top, better than italian) and decide to start a new artistic partnership. to get involved in a new project based on the quality of each of them, but not the old songs... NO POLICE, the same musicians, perhaps with others together...

This could happen on next xmass, in 5 6 or 10 years... No world tour, just new songs on the radio, or mp3. Simple things... as for someone like me (born late 70's) the Police always where:
a list of fabulous songs, directly avalable on tape, record or internet, it's music, it doesn't need any promorion tour (STEWART: such as 90 % on the road missing to be at home). It sounds. just do MUSIC TOGETHER

"it would be the first miss by sting" - I would argue that Sting has had some misses along the way. Don't get me wrong, he has put out some great stuff over the years, but he has also put out some pretty forgettable stuff too.

I agree Andy Summers is approaching 70 and any chance may be soon lost??? if the Police where truly like siblings then any bad or old feelings should be left right where they belong "in the past" but I guess the same could be said about our feelings it was the past, & for those who weren’t around for whatever reason history becomes our best friend you know its the fans who make or break a band perhaps it could be the "THANK YOU Tour" who knows but one thing I do know is I would love to see the Police striped right the F%$#k down back to the 3 piece outfit they started as no back up singers etc just 100% bona fide kick ass POLICE

I just finished reading Andy's book and I cried at the end of it!! Wonderful insight into the band. Andy really did earn his position in the history books. That man really paid his dues before he finally hit it big. I wish he had talked about Stewart more, but I guess it wasn't him that was causing all the friction, just Sting. I really don't understand why Sting was such an arrogrant prick and didn't realize that the reason they became so big was the THREE of them, NOT Sting alone. These three musicians came together and created a new sound. It could have been the ultimate in synergy, but no, Sting wanted total control. Well, I would have thought that after all these years he would have wised up to that fact.

And about them getting back together? I agree with you ska man. The original trio back together again. That's the way it should be. There is just something amazing about just a guitar, bass and drums. I just don't understand what is going through Sting's mind. Why is he so opposed to this idea? For one thing, with him being one of the biggest proponents of charity, you would think he would use a reunion tour in such a capacity. Think about it. They would sell out immediately AND they could sell for higher prices and the fans would still come! So, Sting, if you don't want to do it for the fans, or for the love of the band that got you where you are today, or for the love of the amazing music the three of you created, well, how about for one of your favorite charities? How can you argue with that???

Okay, I'm done. Whew, that took all my energy. I'm spent.

it's a win-win for everyone.

1.) The Fans get to see the greatest band of all time (IMHO)
2.) Sting, Andy and Stewart get to do what they do best together, one last time.
3.) They make all kinds of money, not like they need it.... especially Sting, but it would be nice to get a huge pay day from concert tickets, cds, posters, t-shirt etc.
4.) a renewed interest in music by The Police and each artist individually. CD sells for all of the old albulms would sky rocket, means more residual cash for all of them... especially Sting since he wrote most of the stuff.

If it could be organized, I would say you boycott buying any of Sting's stuff or going to any of his concerts until AFTER he does a Reunion Tour with The Police. He may not owe Andy or Stewart anything.. in fact Stewart has said as much... he said that he got 7 years and 5 albulms out of that guy and he doesn't owe me anything...

But Sting really does owe something to his fans that have supported him over the years... especially the loyal Police fans that began his career.

LOL! I'm with you Dallas! Let's Boycott Sting!!! That's hilarious, but hey, if it'll work, I'll do it in the blink of an eye!

We should start a huge fan-based campaign!!

Bring Back The Police!!! ....or else!

Although I'd be the first in line if they came my way, I don't think they owe us anything.

If they weren't good, we wouldn't have bought the albums, let alone troll their Web sites.

I'm grateful to them that they have maintained their integrity and opted not to go down the road of "The New Cars" and the like.

Still, I'll be there if they choose to give it a whirl.
Thanks for always being yourself Stewart

I think it's just one of thoses things. Talking about the Police makes Sting uncomfortable from what Stewart says. As the guy who brought in most of the songs, he has trouble facing something in his mind he has finished.

You have to look at it (as well as you can) from Stings view. We see the Police as this groundbreaking band with three guys being better together than apart. Sting see's it as a vehicle that he has to compromise getting his feeling of a song across. I hate it but I understand (sort of) his writing is much, much softer now...and the other two still like to rock.

Sting is tired of rocking I think, he doesn't seem to respect any older rockers.

I think he should buy a few albums from THIS year, Bob Dylan Modern Times - Bruce Springsteen Seeger Sessions - Neil Young Praire Wind, Songs of War - Van Morrison Pay the Devil.

Those "old rockers" have put out (in my view) the best albums of the year.

a Police album could be very refreshing, especially if they stick to the three piece sound....clean and real...that would be sweet.

Oh well, maybe Sting will get retrospective one day....or Stewart might decide that Jazz is OK (heh, heh).

Cheers fellow Constables.

Bongo boy. I agree with you to a point. If Sting didn't like to rock, then why did he do the Broken Music tour, which was mostly Police songs? And he even talked about the fact that he just realized that the kids of today have no idea that he used to "rock", and that's why he wanted to do this tour. If he can play them on his own, then why can't he play them with Andy and Stewart? Why can't he just face it? He's not always right? In life, we are born dependent on our mothers, then we learn to be independent, but after that you HOPEFULLY grow up to learn that it's more healthy to be INTERdependent and realize that, hey, we do need other people in this world, two heads (and sometimes three) ARE better than one, etc. Compromise can be a good thing for creativity. To have someone else show you their perspective on something and to meld the two (or three) ideas together. It's having the best of both worlds!

I really don't think Sting would have made it on his own with those very same songs without the valuable input of Andy and Stewart. Okay, well, maybe he would have, but let's face it, he never would have rocked. (I mean, did you HEAR that late 80's version of "Don't Stand So Close to Me"? I'm sorry, but the original version is much more timeless than that!) And that was just what he was trying to prove with the Broken Music tour in the first place. To show the youngin's of the world, and to remind the ones that were there, that he still can rock. If he didn't care about it, he would have never done that tour.

I think that tour was supposed to placate us fans to stop asking about a Police reunion, but you know what? It'll never be the same without the original three, Sting. Never. I don't care if you bring out your son's band to open or even if you get them on stage with you, it's never gonna be the same. The Police was special. Yeah, I'm sure it was a painful time, but if you can hang out with Andy now, and you can have him over to your home, and you can reminisce with him and Stewart transcontinentally (per another thread), then why can't you get on stage with them and bring a little joy to the world? What's the big hairy deal? You know what that makes me think to myself? Drama Queen.

Okay, really. I gotta stop posting today. I have Christmas shopping to finish!

Don't say that, they're not old...

And Stewart's the baby, he's a year younger then Sting.

>>If it doesn't happen in the next 5 years.....<<
I was thinking the same thing about Oysterhead.

>>and some tru fans are too young to ever have get a chance to see them on sceen<<

Yes!

They could raise allot of money for charity (I recall Stewart mentioning he'd do it that way).

I still say Sting won't do it because he thinks it would be like saying his solo carear wasan't as good as The Police.

I don't really want them to do another album together (granted, it would be cool), but the tour that's what I want, to get to see them live! You can listen to the music, watch the concerts on DVD... but nothing beats being there... nothing.

>>Bongo boy. I agree with you to a point. If Sting didn't like to rock, then why did he do the Broken Music tour, which was mostly Police songs?<<
Because the Sacred Love tour got bad reviews (at least around here), so he stripped it down to make people happy (sell more tickets, bring int he younger generation- colleges).

>>And he even talked about the fact that he just realized that the kids of today have no idea that he used to "rock", and that's why he wanted to do this tour<<
Allot do, most just don't like his, "adult contemporary".

>>I really don't think Sting would have made it on his own with those very same songs without the valuable input of Andy and Stewart.<<
It wouldn't have been THE POLICE, and I love the band much, much more then Sting on his own.

Hey, all of you, let me go further with my point of view. Let put it into chapters:

1 - About the definition of MUSIC
Music is 2 things : it’s an art + a business. Somme times it’s more artistic, but more and more, it’s a pastiche of art, a sort of hand work, with lot of cliché, stereotypes, nothing really interesting, rather intelligent, for our brains or ears. If you consider that some music is even put in supermarkets and elevators, to force the consumer to buy more… to forget about time… Some music is like a legal soft drug, having influence on us as subjects from the big world of marketing.
Of course even the cds you can buy (why do you buy them if you can get the songs for free or not much on internet?) are more pieces of plastic the big majors want us to buy, than music = something immaterial, something about feelings.

2 - If you understand what I mean, then you must consider the police:
They are both : art + business.

2.1 – Business
The myth of the 3 blond heads was created and exploited, because fitting with the attempt of the public at that time. A lot of people did a lot of money thru the success of Police. They where a big enterprise with many people around them. A sort of machine. Cash machine. To me, it is sure that even Stewart Copeland, Andy Summers, and Miles Copeland, urn much more money that they could ever have expected without the Police. Of course, Sting too, even if he proved he can still hold his business by a second successful career, wouldn’t have get it so big in such a short time without the same Stew, Andrew and Miles… but, probably, he could have get it anyway, another slower way.

If the Police reunite, it would be about business, first of all. Even if they just play old stuff, even if they play it wrong, even if they play false… At the point they are, they would sold out and have a lot of good critics… Even if every real fan leaves… they would find an audience. An Audience of people brought together by the marketing, promotion and business around the mythic band “po, po, police, the Beatles of the 80’s who left at the top, are back…the real true police you’ve always dreamt about...”
For this reason, I am afraid, if they don’t find a proper way to manage it, it would be very decadent… compared to what it what in the early 80’s. Such as the rolling stones, are. A big fat business : they play the same old rock and roll, their are people who want to hear that, but what does it bring to our ears, now, today in 2006, almost 2007? They are zombies. I would always prefer to look at an old dvd of them, than to go to a big stadium.

2.1.a - And, it’s a shame that sting.com is charged. It should be free.

2.1.b – For instance, consider the move Star Wars from Lucas. He took 20 years to do the second trilogy. But even if the first trilogy was such better than the new one, it became something big, with lot of people going to see the films 3, 4 , 5 or 6 times each! They liked it for other reasons that the first ones could make dream. Even bad, they had success.

Becose music is business, it’s probably better that the police doesn’t reunite. But at the same time, it is more, it’s about art…

2.2 – Art
2.2.a - Music is of course not only money. Even if our generation definitively became the generation of ‘pop idols’, ‘big brother’, etc... even if charisma seams more important than talent. More, even if charisma is now considerate as a talent, and music technique is no more relevant. Even if we have all this computers… music still has something deeper.
And Sting, Stewart and Andy have talent. There face, what they eat, what time they go to bed, what’s the colour of the shoes they where… is absolutely not important. Important is that each of them has a positive impact of the music the other play. Perhaps it’s difficult for them on a personal point. But in matter of music, there is this really fascinating “chemistry”. They are inspired and motivated, when they work together. Even if there are tensions, even if they are too old to fistfight now, even if it’s hard for them, THEY CAN BRING A LOT OF SOUNDS TO OUR EARS !

2.2.b – ARTISTICALLY, it’s a fact that Sting brought much more to the police than Stewart Andy and Miles together. Stewart gave energy and motivation, Andy technique and sophistication, Miles opportunities and a sure image. Sting did most of the composition. Artistically, he was directing. When Sting left Police stopped. If Andy had left, he would have been replaced. The same for Stewart. Yes, regarding to point 2.1 it wouldn’t have been the police anymore. But, artistically, Sting could have change the band members and go one with the same kind of music. Even in a 3 piece. Remember from Ghost in the Machine one, the blond faces aren’t distinctive anymore on the jacket. The music Sting did during the police was more than contributing to 1/3 of what the 3 of them where producing. Never forget, he has composing, writing the lyrics, playing the bass and singing. Not less. By reinterpreting some of the material of that period with other artists (for instance Mr Sting and the Blue Turtles), in other genres (Lute music) he showed to the world it was him the builder of the songs. With all respect : Sting, you’re a big genius for sure.

2.2.c - BUT TODAY, Sting started a retrospective on himself with Brocken Music. Andy did the same with 1 Train Later, Stewart with The Police Inside Out, and all this dis-arrangements.
Sting even did a tour to sell his book, and played Police material (Bella, I am not sure it rocks so much ! ) in a very decadent way for many of us… to the point the very surprising lute album was a fantastic idea to start on something new. I think THE BROCKEN MUSIC TOUR, was, artistically, absolutely AUTO-DESTRUCTIVE !
Now, it’s time to call Stewart and Andy back, to work on something positive, because, as they proved, and is almost accepted by every one now :
- Sting is the boss, no discussion,
- Stewart is energy and motivation,
- Andy is technique and sophistication
And there is no need of Miles anymore (sorry, but, with all respect, i think things are different now). There is no need at all to sell Jaguar vehicles, as there is no need to have very pretty blond faces.

Come on Sting, please.

3. What they could do now

Why not playing the repertoire of Bach ? They can start now and play, even by sitting on chares until they are over 90 years old. They can bring so much to our ears, in any kind of artistic collaborating. What about playing in baroque places (read the topic by Giovanni : Sting performing in dome).

-
Thanks for reading. Sorry for my English.

You know I hve been reading the comments we have been making about why Sting should reunite with The Police and it dawned on me that Stewart has actually given us the answer in his recently relelased DVD Everyone Stares. For those who have seen it, remember after the US festival while their in the Jet counting the money, Stewart says something I found quite compelling. He mentions how they are whisked away and the fans are still screaming but they (the Police) are to far up their Ivory tower to even hear the screaming fans ANYMORE ( a far cry from the first FRENZY) in fact they are in the Jet before the fans even realise that the show is over. Then he says something to the effect of the problem is once you get to where your going there is no where else to go. We all know Sting was in the Police, we all know he can write a 3 minute pop tune or hit single if you will, we all know he has written a grammy award winning song, we all know he can maintain a solo career, we all know we has made young girls lose their minds,we all know he has been a poster boy, we all know he has done acting, But most of all Sting knows all of this so once you get to where you are going were do you go from there. I dont know thats my spin on this matter and if Sting had decided to stay in Newcastle with Last Exit would we know who Stewart and Andy are in the same context that we do, who knows Sting has always taken risk the fact he was in The Police was a risk he took and he continues to do so today... Lute music but like i said before I would love to see the Police striped right the F%$#k down back to the 3 piece outfit they started as no back up singers etc just 100% bona fide kick ass POLICE.. Respect

Did I say He rocked?

Postby bella on 14 Dec 2006 17:21

Philip, that made me laugh. Let me defend myself here. I did not say that the "Broken Music" tour rocked. I said Sting wanted to remind the world and to show the uninformed that he could rock. I saw that tour, and though I thoroughly enjoyed it, it was not anywhere near as rocking as The Police. Okay, I've made my peace.

OH, and Philip. I beg to differ with you. Although Sting brought in the songs, I don't think that makes him the boss or even more important than Andy and Stewart. Yes, he brought the lyrics (excellent) and the melodies, but Andy and Stewart brought the musical genius, that which set them apart from the rest of the world. I think if it weren't for Andy and Stewart, Sting's songs would have sounded like his entire Post-Police catalog of music. And I think the same goes for Andy and Stew, if they didn't have Sting's words, they would have great music, unlike anyone else, but maybe lacking in the lyrical department. And that combination of the three is equally important in my eyes. Although, I do love Andy and Stew's instrumentals, that doesn't sell to the masses, which is unfortunate. I guess it's because, as listeners, we like to be part of a song and that is what the lyrics are there for.

As to the rest of your's and ska man's comments. I don't think it has to be as complicated as you are making it. I don't expect them to get back together and rule the world again or to go to the next level with new music. I just want to hear my favorite band back together again for one last time. That's all. Just get together and have some fun! Just let what happened in the past go... and enjoy the music with the fans in the here and now.

Stewart, are you reading this? How 'bout sending this link to Mr. Sting, with love, from us, the fans. Think he'll read it?

Oh the possibilities...
