SC is appearing on "Beat it" a history of modern drummers (if that's not an oxymoron). hosted by phil jupitus.... there are a numebr of drummers on the programme but stew was mentioned first in the trailer......

you may be able to listen again to it online somehow somewhere in the future....

When John Lennon was asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world he quipped " He wasn't even the best drummer in the Beatles". Lennon's natural put-down is typical of the way drummers are belittled within music circles.

Presenter Phill Jupitus challenges this notion with the help of a cross-section of musicians to discover how they have gained this reputation?

We hear from Clem Burke (drummer with Blondie) and Dr. Marcus Smith who together have proven scientifically that Clem burns a similar amount of calories during a concert as a premiership footballer. Phil Collins (Genesis) and Stewart Copeland (The Police), explain how they cope with the physical demands of performing and how these veterans react to the negative image of the drummer.

Having established the physical demands made on drummers does this exclude women? Dame Evelyn Glennie thinks not as she believes the physicality is not an obstacle. The programme also hears from Kenny Jones (The Small Faces, The Faces and The Who) who still features a drum solo in his set but has the drum solo had its day? Has the modern drummer discarded this indulgence and settled for keeping time at the back? If so why?

For many, the drummer is the joker in the group, Phil Selway of Radiohead explains within the ranks of Britain's moodiest band, there is not too much light hearted banter but he does see his role as a supporting one for the others to be creative.

This whimsical programme hears its fair share of drummer jokes which happily filter through this engaging half hour and yes we discover what Phil Collins thought of the gorilla crashing his way through 'In The Air Tonight" for that famous chocolate TV commercial.

Beat It - The World Of the Modern Drummer an exhaustive and fun exploration of life at the back.

Woo-Hoo!!!

What a cool report! Thanks for the link, smax!

Q: How many drummers does it take to change a light bulb?

A: Three - One to change the bulb and two to stand around and argue about how Stewart Copeland could have done it better :P

at risk of turning this into a drummer joke thread;

radiohead's phil jobby offered;
"what's the difference between a drummer and a savings bond?"
"One of them will mature and make money."

Phil Collins'
"How do you get a drummer off your doorstep"
"Pay him for the pizza."

Thanks Smax. I've really enjoyed listening to this.

I missed the radio show but was able to listen to it just now through the link you gave.

Interesting and very funny with some very corny and terrible jokes about drummers ..... from drummers.

I'm still slightly dazed thinking about Stewarts physical excellence during the tour.

As we say down here PWOOOAR!!!!

Thanks smax

How do you tell if the stage is level?
The drummer is drooling from both sides of his mouth.

Why do guitarists put drumsticks on the dash of their car?
So they can park in the handicapped spot.

How can you tell a drummer is walking behind you?
You can hear his knuckles dragging on the ground.

Why did the drummer stare at the frozen juice can?
Because it said, "Concentrate".

What would you call the smartest drummer in the world?
Mildly retarded.

Why do drummers have lots of kids?
They're not too good at the Rhythm Method.

What is the difference between a bad drummer and a vacuum cleaner?
You have to plug one of them in before it sucks.

:P

Sorry Smax, can't resist perpetuating the thread highjack...I've told this one before...

It's after a gig one night, we're all back stage and the bass player comes over to me and says, "Hey Rusty, you're an awesome drummer but despite that, how do get so many floozies falling all over you?"

I said, "Gord, before we go onstage at the next show, take a potato and put it down your pants. Trust me, the women will go totally wild."

So after the next show Gord says, "I put a potato down my pants just like you said to and now none of the groupies or even the roadies will give me the time of day."

"Gord, you were supposed to put it down the front of your pants - the front, man!"

That's all I got.

Hmmmm. So Stewart thinks women aren't into the big loud noise & bombast?

Go figure, considering he's met Supercat. ;) (And Meg, and Schmaff, and Sock, and Chatchka, and...the list goes on)

I really beg to differ about women being more into musical bonding than confrontation. “Women don’t yearn for that power”? Maybe not in an "alpha male" way, but yeah, a lot of us do.

Always nice to hear Stewart's voice though.
