Favorite Opening Act on a Police Tour

Favorite Opening Act on a Police Tour

Postby drummike on 11 Oct 2010 17:00

Anybody have a favorite opening band on a Police tour?

The Go-Gos, The Fixx, Joan Jett, The English Beat, XTC, Fiction Plane? Who else am I forgetting, Black Uhuru?

I'd have to vote for The Beat, 'cause they were so energetic and fun, and probably were the closest to The Police style-wise.

I'm a long-time R.E.M. fan, so they'd get my vote. Of the other openers I can remember at the moment, I think XTC and Elvis Costello would come in next for me.

There were probably some killer bands with them in the early tours/gigs that I can't think of right now. (Forgive me, D., for not going to look them up on the wiki.)
Dramatic highlights & a unique musical cosmos. Guaranteed.

Um, ya' forgot Elvis C!

I liked him and Fiction Plane, but I'd have to say The Go-Go's. They were new fun. It was a novelty to be a girl band. (And, by freind Blaine used to call me Belinda in college. )
Stewart and Stanley together again!! YO!

Also, you are forgetting Reflex (their hit: The Politics of Dancing), who opened for the boys on some (most?) of the Synch tour in the US. Also omitted are the B-52s, who were the final opening act.

Yes, how could I forget the B-52s, one of the most energetic and fun bands that ever existed, as well as Elvis the C?

Must be getting very forgetful in my old age...

Yeah, Elvis Costello was great opener. I vaguely remember a concert from 83 ish lol. There was Madness, Oingo Boingo, Thompson Twins, Fixx and The Police that was pretty good too. Of course my first concert Ever!!

it'd have to be Tommy Cooper, now that's an odd coupling; (if you dont know; a long deceased old hilarious, self-depreciating 'magician', deliberately crap, very funny, died live on TV in the late 80's at somepoint).... am i right? in a tent on Tooting Common or something?

nice choices D, i've found myself having to listen to XTC more and more recently....

In Milwaukee on the Synch Tour (Feb. 20, 1984) The Reflex did not open for some reason. If memory serves (and I wasn't at that gig...grrrr) it was a local Milwaukee band, but I'm seeing that it might have been The Fixx.

I was at that Milwaukee show. It was not The Reflex. It was some local band. It was not the Fixx.

For the story on why the Reflex did not play Milwaukee, check out the Police Wiki. Deitmar got the story from the band members of The Reflex themselves. Short answer: too much partying from the prior shows.

I keep thinking it was Those Spanic Boys, but their website says they didn't get started until 1986. Hmmm...

Oh Yes! That would have been strange and wonderful to see. I believe he did support The Police in a tent on Tooting common and I think the poor bloke nearly had a nervous breakdown coping with ultra enthusiastic fans. He did indeed die live on TV. He collapsed and everyone thought it was part of the act. A very very funny man.

I digress.

Saw FP as the opening act at Wembley October 07 but remember the sound not being that good.

The Kooks played before The Police at the IOW festival 08 but we were so busy bartering our way down to the front with drinks, ciggies, hugs, kisses, wet wipes, deodrant!? that we didn't really get to listen to them.

Would have loved to have seen XTC or the B52's or Elvis Costello. Imagine a show with all three of them as opening acts!
