Strange Things Happen: 2nd edition is now available

Postby luddite lady on 10 Jul 2010 00:08

Wasn't it due out in the UK around about now? Any new information about this would be greatly appreciated.
(I managed to write this whole post without a single comma!)

do a google search with the appropriate words and your post in this thread is the top result :) ...... so that'll be a 'dunno' from the uk jury.

Thanks muchly, especially moonstone.
The July 8 released paperback is also available to order at amazon.ca. I'll be ordering it for myself shortly.
The Sept. 9 edition will be available in Chapters/Indigo stores in Canada and can also be pre-ordered right now.
The July one has a slightly different cover from the hard cover edition. But there is no image yet for the Sept. book.

Upon further research, I am bemused to see that neither of the paperback editions is listed at the US site amazon.com.
Perhaps these UK/Canadian editions will be filled with Stewart's humour rather than his humor.

Well, I just bought the July 8th edition. I'm going to end up with quite a book collection, or more correctly, quite a collection of a book.

I got the July 8th edition in the mail today. Curious. Although I ordered it from a supposedly Canadian seller on amazon.ca, the book was shipped from London, England. I guess it really is only available in the UK.

From what I can see, there are very few changes from the hard cover book. There's a few corrections to the photo captions. Maracana Stadium is rightly identified where it had previously been mistaken for River Plate Stadium. I remember some eagle-eyed Nutter had pointed out that error. But Stewart still talks about being grumpy in Calgary instead of Edmonton. I haven't done an in-depth comma by comma comparison of punctuation. (My family still has the local asylum on speed dial just in case though.)

Being a paperback with smaller print, this edition has different pagination than the hard cover one. (Thank you for allowing me the geeky joy of using the word pagination.) The unfortunate thing about this is that nobody seemed to have thought about this when it came to the photo credits. They were copied verbatim from the original book, crediting people for pictures on pages with no image or the wrong image. I hope that'll be corrected in the September release.

I really like the new cover though. The title is easier to read, and the cover picture is cropped in such a way that Stewart no longer looks like a genie emerging from his snare. However, some of you will be horrified to learn that the serial comma has been dropped from the title. (Ooops, I mentioned commas. Don't tell my kids or they'll be reaching for the phone to get me "help".)

LL-- as always, you are part of the story! I loved this "review", even the comments on the commas (did I use mine correctly?) And don't worry, because what happens on the sc.net stays on the sc.net (or at least among friends!) Maybe you should right your own STH. What would it be called? Hmmm. Thanks for my morning dose of Nutter!

Since you all know I'm obssessed, I'm not ashamed to admit that I was checking out on-line booksellers to see if there's any more news about the paper back edition to be released in September. The sites now have an image of the cover. It looks the same as the British edition released in July except there is once again a serial comma before "and Pygmies". This development has me grinning like an idiot. It's a little scary how much joy one can derive from a comma. For me, having a copy of the commaless edition of the book is akin to having one of the Fall Out singles with a rare variant label.

Re: STH: 2nd edition is now available even in US

As a little gift to myself, I picked up the North American paperback edition of STH that was released a couple of days ago. They had about seven copies or so on display at my local Chapters store. The book also appears to be available through amazon.com and Borders.
Overall, it's a better quality edition than the UK one. First off, there's that lovely comma in the title. Second, the book and its cover seem to be printed on superior paper, making the photos come out a little crisper. (There's still no saving that Oysterhead picture though. Is that photo some sort of inside joke that I just don't get?) What's more, it looks like the photo credit page errors got worked out. But, on closer examination, it turns out that this edition has the same pagination as the hardcover copy, averting the problem altogether. And, Stewart actually corrected that Western Canadian city mistake. This new edition refers rightly to "three assholes grumped out at Edmonton". I'm not saying the asshole part is necessarily accurate, just the geographic location of said assholes.

Strange Things Happen: North American paperback edition: $13.59

Amazon.co.uk will happily ship anywhere. You should be able to order a copy direct from them.
