The Equalizer: The Movie, starring Russell Crowe?

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/movies/ ... dward.html

The relevant middle bit:

The actor [Russell Crowe] has attached himself to play Robert McCall, the mysterious agent made famous by Woodward in the 1980s CBS crime series. Fans of the series will remember that McCall's background was murky -- he once worked for a top-secret agency, where he did some pretty horrible things -- and we watched him every week in his new, repentance-minded guise, righting wrongs for the persecuted by settling scores with their persecutors (and assorted miscreants)....

Mired for years in development at the Weinstein Co., the cinematic reimagining of "The Equalizer" now is with a group of high-level producers: industry veteran Mace Neufeld ("Hunt for Red October" and a slew of action hits), who's actually been involved for a while; Adam Sandler collaborator Alex Siskin; and Escape Artists, the company that produced action movies like "The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3" and darker films like "Seven Pounds." There's no studio on board yet, but it's been making the rounds to a number of Hollywood studios for several weeks, some of which have shown interest.

There's good reason for that. The 1980s have shown some box-office life with "The Karate Kid," which became an unqualified hit last weekend. Of course, that was a family-oriented crowd-pleaser. Going gritty didn't work, on any level, with another '80s revival in "The A-Team." And there's no shooting script, so don't expect to see this at the multiplex anytime soon.

ETA: Nice art at the top: http://www.slashfilm.com/2010/06/15/rus ... s-tv-show/
Dramatic highlights & a unique musical cosmos. Guaranteed.

Darn. I was hoping that this would be a film adaptation of my life.

I wouldn't cast Crowe as me though.

Ha! Very funny, EQ.

Although I'm glad they're making a movie since I never saw the TV show.

:(

No Edward Woodward (and no SC soundtrack), no Equalizer for me. I just can't see it.

I'm so over all the 80's tv series re-make into movies. The only reason that this remotely excites me is that they will hopefully release more seasons of the Equalizer on DVD. I agree with sockii, there's no substitute for the great, late Edward Woodward. The only actor that comes to mind who I think might be able to do the role some justice is Ewan McGregor. Russell Crowe would not be on my short list.

Isn't it too early to assume Stewart's theme won't be used? I'm biased, but to me it remains among the most memorable TV theme songs of all time. They even go so far as mention it in the slashfilm article. Guess I'll give this a chance, but it looks like it's gonna be a while anyway...

Ewan McGregor would be perfect! He could bring the perfect combination of class and toughness to the role. Crowe's too much of a bulldog.

I wouldn't even mind if they updated Stewart's theme a bit, as long as they kept the main bits intact. Remember how they did that with the Lost In Space theme at the end of the movie? And yes, I was one of the very few who actually liked that movie.

Wow, I am sorry I missed that! The Equalizer mostly was on while I was in university (no TV for me), so I never watched it, maybe one or two episodes at most.
HSMB, if you could pass on the Season and Episode #'s info, I could check it out here at work/Library sometime. Would LOVE to StewartHimself, even if just briefly, on the show.

I'll have to dig out the video cassette. I'm not sure of the title of the episode. From what I can gather, it was season 2, around 1987.

Yep, Stewart appeared in the last episode of the second season. It was entitled Re-entry and featured John Goodman and Steve Buscemi before they were famous.

Yes, technophile Conroy 8) showed us Stewart's Equalizer stint while we were standing in line waiting for tickets to the fan club show in Vancouver. I think he played a con man or a pickpocket.

I don't remember seeing it on the series, but I tuned in on a semi-regular basis.

Can definitely see Ewan as the EQ . Not much of a Russel Crowe fan.

Con's always got some cool "Gizmo" in his pockets.
Stewart and Stanley together again!! YO!
