I'm not sure I can sanction a list that includes terry Bozzio as one to the top ten worst drummers. However, I got a laugh for the reasoning why Josh Freese was considered to be one of the worst (had nothing to do with his actual drumming)

I put it, because of recently thread based on "Listing" artwork with Photoshop that designed Stewart and Andy on covers of "Time" and "Vogue" Magazines... that' s why, I mentioned this is "true"

Though a little cruel, perhaps, I thought he's spot on with Bozzio. You have to keep in mind the author is a songwriter, so serving the song and rocking the joint seem to be his main criteria.

His tone is pretty hyperbolic, so I don't think he's actually saying Bozzio sucks, he's just saying Bozzio has chops galore and little restraint. This is understandable given that Bozzio was raised by Frank Zappa, a man who made an entire genre out of chops galore and little restraint. However, when you're playing in a pop band like the Knack, over the top chops like that are inappropriate: they can detract from rather than add to the effect.

It's actually kind of interesting to think about Stewart in that light. Stewart's a guy with loads of chops, though not technically as accomplished as a dozen or so drummers as we could easily name, Bozzio included.

However, no slouch, Stewart has more than enough chops to get the job done. As far as a certain songwriter is concerned, it would seem he has too many chops. Certainly, his playing can't be called minimalist, I don't think.

But for me, Stew's got just the right stuff. He's really a song guy, and uses his muscular musicality to great effect. That's what the author is talking about: "Hot licks and rhetoric don't count much for nothing. Be sure you can use what you borrow." This balance of chops and pop is for me what makes The Police catch fire, while, for me, the music of Sting dimly glows like the unattended bonfire after the party.

The author values Chops some, only a little: he begrudgingly allows Charlie Watts on the list, though Watts is definitely a minimalist. But Watts always makes it work.

Anyone familiar with Terry's work knows that he is first and foremost an "artiste". However, check out his work on Robbie Robertson's solo album from 1987. He goes from tasteful and restrained on Broken Arrow to absolutely slammin' on American Roulette. He creates the perfect feel and mood on both tunes.

I have to agree with the guy on Carl Palmer. I never got why so many drummers have held him in such high regard. The guy's all over the place tempo-wise. Amen on Martin Chambers as well. He totally rawks. Chrissy Hynde is so stupid. In my current band, we cover both Middle of the Road and Don't Get Me Wrong. Can you guess which one I would drop in a heartbeat if I could?

Oo-oo., Stewart Copeland AND Neal Peart on the same list!! I Like!!!!

And what, exactly, are this guy's qualifications?

Any idiot with internet access and 5 minutes to spare can come up with a "Top Ten List"

So, here's mine, mostly in no particular order :

1. Stewart Copeland
2. Neil Peart (I don't even care much for Rush but obviously this guy has to be on the list)
3. Kenny Arnoff
4. Jim Keltner
5. Chad Smith
6. Mitch Mitchell
7. ......Ahhh.. who am I kidding, I hate top ten best lists.

Even worse than top ten best lists are top ten WORST lists. Who does this guy think he is?

4. Me
5. Me
6. ...well you get the idea, right? If you want proof I'll send you a recording.

I figure even if someone is playing simple rock beats for the worst pop-crap band ever, they're all one up on me because they are playing drums for a living! So, I don't get the author of this blog hating on anyone on his worst list. Also, anyone who thinks Bill Berry "plods along" clearly hasn't had "Star 69" or "Orange Crush" come up on their iPod in the middle of a run (which happened to me this morning).
