Sting and the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra are pairing up for a North American tour beginning this summer. The tour will feature Sting tunes like Fields of Gold as well as hits by his former band, the Police, including Roxanne and Every Breath You Take. Those songs will be arranged for the 54-piece orchestra, to be conducted by Steven Mercurio and accompanied by a quartet that includes a guitarist, a multipercussionist, another vocalist and a bassist. The tour will begin on June 2 in Vancouver and continue on to Denver, Los Angeles and the Ravinia Festival near Chicago. Additional dates in New York, Boston, Toronto and elsewhere are yet to be announced. Tickets go on sale March 8.

yawn. that seems like a fucking pointless thing to do, from my late-night, slightly drunk disposition.
ETA: was going to edit this to play nice, but i've changed my mind.... anything with a 54 piece Orchestra sounds amazing: unless it's the above.

I see no reason to play nice when it's obvious that this is total bullshit--and just another example of how completely creatively dry Stingo is at this point in time. Just finding yet another way to milk his audience by recycling old material instead of anything new.

BINGO. I came here today to post the exact same thing. The dude has officially jumped the shark. He's got nothin' left. Just go to Il Pilagio to live out your days and stop torturing us already, between the beard and the regurgitating yourself! Geeze. Enough already.

I guess the next step in this pattern of devolution of a rock star would be a CD of all covers. Or does the Lute CD kind of qualify that box in the checklist.
At any rate, I'm saving my dough for the world premiere of the gamelan piece in Dallas. Just based on the nuggets Dane posted, it's already seems exponentially fresher in comparison.

I was going to comment on how sad it was that Sting isn't doing any new material, but then I remembered his last attempt in Sacred Love, which is now 7 years ago. I would rather he do old things than another Sacred Love.
I doubt I will go see this show if it is in the DC area. Certainly not travel to see it.

Yep, for a dude that claims to NOT be nostalic. Stingo seems to be coasting the last seven-plus years on his past.
For every AWESOME retro-thing (POLICE!) he pulls off, we have to suffer through rap guys butchering Roxanne, Every Breath, etc..., self-made remakes of songs like The Hounds of Winter, and this orchestra-themed Next To You remakes... The freaking set list for this new tour is going to be the same Police songs we got on Tourzilla...
I know the guy is VERY smart and very creative. But this blows. He hasn't written new rock/pop stuff since Sacred Love in 2003?!? If pop/rock bores you, stop revisiting your former cool self altogether and write an opera or two. Wait a minute, come to think of it maybe he DARES not enter the current Stew-niverse.

Hell yeah I'm going. I said I would do anything if there was a Police tour. I just wonder if it's tacky to have a sign that says..."I'm only here because you did the reunion tour"

When I recieved the EMAIL from "The Police" about this, well, sockii and the rest of y'all said all that SHOULD be said
!!! and if I might add:
Now a 54-piece LUTE orchestra, maybe, the Jhn Dowland Wall-of-Sound, heeheehee......
Think I'll see the English Beat instead when they're in town next month! If I don't wear my Psychedelic Furs shirt, I'll wear my Tourzilla from Churchill!

I received too this e-mail from "The Police"... probably like many others here, I assume. So I unsubscribed to the newsletter as I don't think I will receive any news from The Police for the following decade(s).
Sting covering himself at this point makes me think it's no more covers, it's a parody.
I just bought the new Peter Gabriel's CD last saturday, "Scratch my back", and WOW, this is a good cover album. There's an orchestra, but the simpliest it can be. And this is a humble album: no Peter Gabriel covering himself (he could!), but paying tribute to other artists (Bowie, Paul Simon...).
Hey Sting, please surprise us again, and make a cover album with songs from Stewart and Andy! But please, no symphonic thing.

i'm sure there is some hilarious comment to be made about the fact that the tour is sponsored by xerox.

I'm more excited by the possibility of "Dream of the Blue Turtles" being remixed for its 25th Anniversary release than this fucking dribble...
