OT: Bongoboy - getting original songs ON itunes ?

Postby BongoBoy on 11 Jan 2010 14:08

I have just started researching this.

I need to know the rules (in Canada) for getting MY original songs on itunes.

I got an itouch for Christmas and have concluded I have been missing the boat. If you get your original songs on itunes then you have leaped a huge hurdle.

I assume there is a lot of rules, they wouldn't want everyones demo's.(record deal probably)

Any help would be sweet.

Maybe some of you are on there and I don't even know ? (smax should be)

You Nutties are the smartest people I know, I had to ask.

Thanks you for your patience. (new vid coming)

there are lots of people who will hold your hand for a fee, natch!

i've previoously done it through cd-baby who have a distribution deal on itunes and they're one of the biggets names doing this thing out there.. , cost about $35 per album or something, they get the bar code (UPC code) you need to sell a product, they and other companies (like tunecore) offer other services like artwork etc....but i should imagine you can do it for single releases and EPs n that, probably for a fee per song.

http://www.cdbaby.com/Search/bGFycA%3d%3d/0

just done a quick search and there are lots of other companies doing the same thing; tho i've read some scare stories about people who didn't read the small print or paid more than $50 for UPC code (which is waaay too much apparently) or unwittingly didn't retain the rights to their songs and some tales about unreliable people who didn't get the product out and so fucked up someone's release date and promotion etc.. nightmare.... but cd-baby seem to be the big boys and have done us really well.

oh, dunno about canada tho....

let us (all) know.

heh, I knew you'd be in there smax.

Thanks Man.

I was kinda scared off by all those companies offering to do it for you. Maybe that is how it's gotta be. Very interesting. Word of mouth and some gigs and things could get a wee bit better if I was on itunes.

The investigation continues.

Cheers. I'll let cha know.

cool... undoubtably you can get your own bar code... but that seems like a possible probable headache to me; at least these companies are are used to dealing with musician scumbags and so make it quite easy....

Hey smax while I have you on the line?

what was that band/project you had that was kinda rootsy ...why do I remember "sticks" maybe I have lost it. This brain is getting old. I am probably way off.

Anyway, I remember really liking that stuff, acoustic, warm subtle drums...really cool.

I wanna hear it again.

Thanks again buddy, I owe you a pint. Hopefully at a gig where both playing. Not a gig with shitty promoters though! I know you been there done dat ! heh, heh.

I feel excited!

yeah, was "pickup sticks" (www.ilovepickupsticks.com) but i've just looked and the website is down.... tho we haven't been very busy; the drummer's just done 12 month driving ban which kinda stopped the gig action and the singer has just finished making a documentary film (Superhero Me) which has devoured his time, and they both got married too so we've pretty much done fuck all recently (for "recently" read "all year" )... still playing with other bands tho and doing some o' mine own too so it's all good. well, relatively.

so where are you at?

thanks DM.
