OT: What was your first album?

OT: What was your first album?

Postby DirtyMartini on 02 Dec 2009 18:59

Not sure if this one's been done before; TOWOS inspired this question over in the London Calling thread:

What was your first record or album of whatever medium that you ever had/bought?

We had a stand-alone record player with a big, fake amplifying horn in the living room on which the real records were played (mostly '60s folk, '50s rock, Grease, and Christmas carols), but of my very own:

My first record that wasn't one of those plastic Fisher-Price discs was a pink 45 of Strawberry Shortcake singing god knows what (played on a portable Mickey Mouse record player).

My first album -- the one I bought at Bradlees myself with my very own money -- was a cassette tape of The Monkees Greatest Hits.

Pretty flash, huh?
Dramatic highlights & a unique musical cosmos. Guaranteed.

It's only due to that record that I started playing drums

The first album I bought with my own money I think was Aladdin Sane by David Bowie. I was about 7 when it was released and about 12 when I bought it. I didn't understand it then but loved the way it sounded. It was pinched off me pretty damn quick by my elder sister but I got my own back by nicking her very cool Police albums a couple of years later.

First single was Spaceoddity by David Bowie. (Probably because it kept being played on Top of the Pops)
First CD King Crimson - Three of a perfect pair. (Was too bombed at the time to remember why)

I'm not admitting to anything that just might have been bought for me at christmas by any well meaning but ill informed relatives, and I most definately never asked for or indeed spent my very very hard earned pocket money on anything involving David Soul.

Hall & Oates - Private Eyes.

And now I feel an intense need to listen to it again. Gee, thanks. :P

Ha! Ya know, in some ways I guess it's predictable given our respective ages...

I don't remember in what order, but my first three were probably 'Mr Roboto' by Styx, 'H2O' by Hall and Oates, and the Xanadu soundtrack. Heh.

Ya know, I just started to apologize for this - I had been exposed to some good stuff, thanks to my dad and older brother, who were into roots music and new wave, respectively - but it occurs to me I still listen to a lot of that good old 80s overproduced so-called rock 'n roll. First concert was also Hall & Oates. Nothing wrong with those guys, unless you haven't ever heard the likes of the Chi-Lites of the Ohio Players, which I hadn't at that age...

I'm not 'fessing up about the first 45s (smurfs may have been involved), but thankfully I fell under the musical influence of a friend's elder brother shortly afterwards, so the first LP was The Fine Art of Surfacing - Boomtown Rats.....
...and I've just noticed I haven't got it on cd. Bugger.

I think the "Grease" soundtrack was the first record I specifically requested.

I clearly remember the first CD I bought in 1987 when I got my first stereo with CD player, my first "big" purchase with my part time Barnes & Noble job: Reggatta de Blanc :)

Holy crap DM, you had a Bradlees!? I have not seen a Bradlees outside of New City, New York before or after my first eighteen years of life. You must have grown up a tri-state girl. My first album was not purchased, it was gifted to me at my rockin' sleepover birthday party, Pink Floyd-The Wall. We listened to it as question marks appeared over all our heads and then we whipped out the Ouiji board and did "light as a feather, stiff as a board"
I appreciated the album far more after a few years. My family was huge into music so we actually purchased Zenyatta Mondatta at Sam Goody together while the bemused sales guy looked at us funny!

First album bought with my money 'Outlandos D'Amour', after I had 'Reggatta De Blanc' bought by my sister in 1979.

I've still got the vinyl. if you happen to know anyone with one of those clever (and very expensive) thingys that can convert vinyl to disc or indeed if you have a turntable yourself then e-mail me and I'll send it on.

The first record I received was a 45 from "Grease". The first album I purchased was a cassette tape of "Synchronicity".
