Amnesty's legendary 1986 all-day concert shown in 'real time' - celebrating its anniversary this month
Never on VHS – Never on DVD!

Sunday June 28, 2009 - 12:00 noon
Lincoln Center, New York City

A CONSPIRACY OF HOPE

(1986, 660 mins, Amnesty International/MTV)

Inspired by the success of the UK-produced "Secret Policeman's Ball" shows, films and albums - and in particular the impact of rock musicians on galvanizing the public, in June 1986 the US section of Amnesty organized a six-city tour of the US in which a caravan of musicians would spread the human rights message at concerts. Starring U2, The Police (specially reformed after a 4-year hiatus), Peter Gabriel, Jackson Browne and Lou Reed - the shows were a rollicking success. The tour's grand finale was an all-day concert at Giants Stadium. The touring artists were joined by a plethora of artists including Bryan Adams, Carlos Santana, Miles Davis, Joan Armatrading, Rubén Blades, Joan Baez, Fela, The Neville Brothers, Bob Geldof, Howard Jones, Joni Mitchell, Yoko Ono, Steven Van Zandt. With appearances by Robert DeNiro, Michael J. Fox, Muhammed Ali. The 11-hour concert was televised by MTV as a Live Aid-style spectacular. This all-day special only ever aired live - and was never repeated. Never on VHS or DVD. We are showing it uncut, in the same month-of-the-year, same day-of-the-week, exact same timeframe. Minute-by-minute, hour-by-hour. 12-noon till 11pm. Re-experience this entire legendary 80s music fest wearing your best 80s duds! Prizes for best outfits! This is the film's World Theatrical Premiere.

Rock Musicians:
Bryan Adams • Joan Armatrading • Joan Baez • Ruben Blades • Jackson Browne • Miles Davis • John Eddie • Fela • Peter Gabriel • Bob Geldof • The Hooters • Howard Jones • Stanley Jordan • Joni Mitchell • The Neville Brothers • Yoko Ono • Peter Paul & Mary • The Police • Lou Reed • Carlos Santana • Third World • U2 • Steven Van Zandt • Third World

Conspiracy of Hope
WORLD THEATRICAL PREMIERE
The Secret Policeman’s Film Festival
Country: USA, Release: 1986, Runtime: 660

A marathon anniversary screening of Amnesty International’s legendary, all-day New York concert in real time.

Re-experience the entire legendary festival wearing your best 80s duds! Prizes for best outfits!

Inspired by the success of the U.K.-produced Secret Policeman’s Ball shows, films, and albums, the U.S. section of Amnesty International organized a six-city U.S. tour in 1986. A caravan including U2, The Police (specially re-formed after a four-year hiatus), Peter Gabriel, Jackson Browne, and Lou Reed spread the human rights message at the rollicking concerts, capped off by a grand finale, all-day event with a greatly expanded artist lineup at Giants Stadium. The 11-hour concert was aired live by MTV as a Live Aid-style spectacular, and the broadcast was never repeated or released on VHS or DVD. This screening, exactly twenty-three years later, represents the entirety of the original concert down to the last minute.

The grand finale of the “A Conspiracy Of Hope” US tour for Amnesty International was an all-day concert with over 20 top musical artists at Giants Stadium, New York that took place on a beautiful Sunday in June 1986. Among those who introduced the musicians and talked about Amnesty were:

Robert De Niro • Kevin Bacon • Michael J. Fox • Richard Belzer • Matt Dillon • Muhammad Ali • Elliot Gould • Pat Benatar • Bill Bradley • Christopher Reeve • Daryl Hannah • Pam Grier • Yoko Ono • Sean Lennon • Robin Williams

We will be screening the entire 11 hours of the concert – exactly as it happened – at the exact same time of day - hour-for-hour, minute-for-minute. This is a rough timetable of the concert with approximate start times of each musical artist:

12:00pm John Eddie
12:30pm Third World
1:15pm The Hooters
1:45pm Peter, Paul & Mary

It's an inevitably ridiculous idea in some ways, but it's the Police's last pre-reunion, non-HoF/wedding band performance (plus a bunch of other damn cool people as well) in larger-than-life glory for only $20 -- with air conditioning.

For me this about as close as it'll get to going back in time and catching what I missed, so I'm totally in.

Minus the stupid outfits though.

I'm in and I think I'm going in for some of the films the day before.
I have a video tape of the evening portion of this and if memory serves me correct I think we'll be treated to shorts and tube socks. :D

I had forgotten about the Joni Mitchell performance. Pete Townshend was scheduled for that slot but had to leave because his father had taken ill. Remember, this was 1986 when Bryan Adams was on the heels of his "Reckless" album. VERY Popular. Then we expected U2 because who else was left? We assumed the Police would be last. But first, Joni Mitchell. I know she is beloved by many, but that was painful.

I wouldn't say no to a great DVD recording of The Police's gig + the grand finale...

Was this the show(s) that Stewart stuck to tradition but Sting and Andy wore those all white long robe things? :?

MY GOD!!! What has happened to Bryan Adams??? He went fron a rough reckless child to a muzak bad ballad crooner. I want the tough leather songs back. Where's the Cuts Like a Knife? Run To You? One Night Love Affair???

YES. Sting is wearing a shirt that is so big and long it could be a dress. Andy, not as much.

Right!
I think at the time it was cool/fashionable/making a statement :?

But then Bono's mullet was so cool, right :?

But it is so funny Stewart just wore the same old thing

How I wanted Bono's jacket. WTF he was doing wearing suede in June, I don't know, but that was the coolest and most beautiful jacket of 1986. :)

By the way, the Sting clip promoting the festival is very cute and funny.

1:30 great shot of THE jacket.

My bad, the mullet was gone by COH, he had the mullet in '85 when I saw them.

And yes, the jacket was 8)

Much better than the flowy robe things. The jacket still looks good, the white robes things on the other hand I don't think have stood the test of time

I'd take a DVD.

However, '86 was only a TWO year hiatus for the Police. The Synch tour ended in '84.
