To celebrate the release of his new book 'Please Release Me: My Life with the Police' and his newly commissioned American Symphony, Stewart Copeland, possibly the greatest living American musical stylist, is doing something unusual for a drummer:
He will be the first drummer to be featured by the 'Guitar Hero' video game franchise. This edition will be entitled 'Guitar Hero Drummer Edition: Stewart Copeland' for release in November 2009.
When consulted on the release, brother Miles Copeland said, "Yes, of course we wanted to take advantage of synergy." He also indicated he's clearly thinking of the boost his brother's game may enjoy from coming so soon on the heels of Rock Band's 'Beatles Edition'. We warn you, occasionally the elder Copleand 's language can be QUITE colorful:
"Yeah, we definitely figured that we'd get a boost with the boomers by the profile of the game being raised by The Fab Four. But you know what? My Brother played at Shea Stadium, too. And when he did? Admission wasn't five fucking dollars! It was TWENTY EIGHT!"
With the swagger familiar to the Copeland creed he added, "Ringo Shmingo. When My Brother played Shea he did it for more than 25 Minutes, know what I'm saying? "
The game will feature many Police songs, as as well songs by bands influenced by Copeland including:
Nirvana
Foo Fighters
Incubus
No Doubt

The folks at Guitar Hero are hoping to cover ground lost since the first edition of Rock band, as the popularity of drumming lessons and electronic drumset sales have skyrocketed as much as 500% since the first edition of Rock Band in 2005.
Not only is there a fascinating tutorial into drumming techniques of Mr. Copeland's style included with the game, but the 'Thunder Chariot Hardware' Editions available will knock boomer ex-drummers right off of their couch and onto the throne. 3 different editions of Stewart's drumset will be available in a price range from $399-$1999. The cheapest alternative is a simple 'Outlandos' era 5 piece, with the most expensive being an electronic representation of the monster kit Stewart played on the massively successful recent Police Reunion Tour.
But Guitar heroes and those who enjoy pretending to be guitar heroes can relax and enjoy along with their drummer friends, because there is plenty of "Sweet Noodling" as Copeland calls it, on 'Guitar Hero Drummer Edition: Stewart Copeland', too.
The finale of the game features Stewart going toe to toe with lots of fancy guitar heroes, and possibly even another one who drums... Dave Grohl, anyone? Andy Summers is, of course, featured on the release, as well.
Industry analysts say this game could do very well given the track record of rock music games in the last few years, however some are skeptical that the game will be more than a 'niche title' if the Copeland title doesn't sit well with a certain Englishman in New York.
Stewart is evasive but ebullient when asked about the questionable presence of another famous Policeman in the game: "Well, you know, I got over his whole control thing years ago. So, I guess we'll see. Maybe on the second version. But you know, this one's going to have lots of his songs, and some Kool Klark Kent songs, too! And Oysterhead! Trey, dude! Sweet noodling!"
Likewise, brother Miles Copeland won't confirm or deny the presence of Sting.
"If that geordie twat hadn't of freaking fired me, we wouldn't be in this mess right now. But I have a feeling after the U2 Box Office numbers come out, my phone is going to be a-ringing, you know what I'm saying? That jerkoff would be nothing without me. Well, at least we're getting this thing out in time for Christmas."
