(Was "LOCK threads" thread ) LOCK CRAZY NUTTERS TH

Postby dafttart on 05 Sep 2008 08:41

At this juncture I would like to add my favourite trio of fag, bum and fanny to the pot :D

I know they don't make ones tongue tickle with excitement when you say them but their different meanings on either side of the Atlantic never cease to amuse me

Now Stingo's Nutters and Andykins gather round for today's word:

Bollocks

Noun, pl
the testicles
Noun
nonsense; rubbish

Being a girl born in England I knew what bollucks meant But my choir teacher in high school did not :!: She had found a "CLASSICAL" song with the chorus Of
"Bollocks will pay Bollocks will pay "

sung in beautiful harmony by just the girls. It was interrupted by a snickering teenager each and every time we practiced it. The teacher ignored me and was determined to have us sing this in public maybe win awards in the highbrow competitions :? I could just image my parents sitting in on that  My friends asked What's with the snickering and the laughing I just blurted out "It means balls"

We never sang that song again

Tomorrows word:
Rubbish Rub ish

Jab.

American: a quick thrust or blow, often referring to boxing.

British: a vaccine/shot.

Knocked up.

American: inadvertently impregnated.

British: came by and rang the doorbell for a visit.

Fag is used in Britain too. I guarantee it.

When I moved here, my English was totally UK, so when I said "where's my jumper and my trainers?" or "let's walk on the platform" Mr T. looked at me weird.   (you mean sidewaaak?)

Also I used "Don't be daft!" a lot. Now I say "Don't be a moron!".

"Brilliant!" and "Terrific!" were substituted by "WOW!" and "Awesome!"
"I.Know.This.Name"!

It isn't 'borrowing' as such. It isn't like you're going to give it back. More - well - 'bumming'. A useful verb.

I've always wanted to call my smokes "fags". It just wouldn't work out I don't think.

Fag in American is "poof" in British, yes?

There were a depressing number of pejorative terms for a gay man in British english, but so many of them have been reclaimed as descriptive rather than offensive that they have to be proceeded with an expletive to be offensive. I guess that is something to be happy about. Ish.

I find that a car park sounds so much more scenic than a parking lot.

I had a friend from Britain who thought that a laundromat was a special absorbant carpet that one would spread a handwash on to let it air dry.
In Dallas, the only game that really mattered was in the word gamelan.
