Hey folks...

Just got back yesterday from Bellingham, WA where I was staying (and crossing into Canada for both the 5/27 and 5/28 shows). Had a really great time up there. Vancouver really is a very nice city (also was expecting the weather to be MUCH worse!). Warm hellos to Conroy, (the by-now-almighty) Dietmar, and all the other SC.net brethren I was able to catch up with outside GM Place!

A truly great show... here's my (somewhat belated) play-by-play:

MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE did seem like a bit of a safe choice for an opener but was VERY well performed...

VERY solid version of SYNCH II... the new parts and half-time/double-time stuff is starting to grow on me...

DON'T STAND SO CLOSE TO ME did sound a bit flimsy for my tastes, though the guitar break sounded very good (Eventide Eclipse instead of the ol' Roland guitar synth... wasn't sure it would work, but it did)...

VOICES/WHEN THE WORLD was pretty much like the new version from the Whisky, but of course MUCH, MUCH tighter... loved it...

SPIRITS IN THE MATERIAL WORLD sounded very nice... very interesting guitar riff in the chorus...

DRIVEN TO TEARS was definitely one of the major highlights for me... really brought the house down...

VERY solid version of WALKING ON THE MOON... instrumental break in the middle w/Sting's new bassline sounded killer...

honestly didn't care much for the new TRUTH HIT'S EVERYBODY... sounded almost a bit too country-ish for my tastes... (read somewhere that they drop-kicked it from the setlist on the 30th)...

loved the guitar-work on EVERY LITTLE THING SHE DOES IS MAGIC... I personally would have stayed with the double-time, fast rock beat on the chorus instead of the "latin-ish" beat, but very good overall...

really enjoyed the new WRAPPED AROUND YOUR FINGER... Stewart's little splash/spinning cymbal stuff along with the tabla loop gave it a really nice Middle-Eastern feel, while the tympani in the chorus gave it a bit of a film-soundtrack sort of vibe... very creative...

loved the new BED'S TOO BIG WITHOUT YOU... the repetitive part before the chorus ("...least of my fears") now has an almost Mediterranean folk-ish trance-ish thing to it that I like (possible Stewart Italian music influence, maybe?)...

MURDER BY NUMBERS doesn't quite sound like the original version, of course, but still a very nice new loungey, jazzy version... really enjoyed the instrumental break before the 3rd verse...

DE DO DO DO sounded nice, though I really didn't care much for the traditional pop key change/uplift thing near the end... could definitely do without it...

I personally never liked any live version of INVISIBLE SUN that I've ever heard, but this one's almost kinda growing on me...

I found the part where Stewart breaks away from his drumset and starts running around the stage to be quite moving, like a kid enjoying the "multi-million dollar rock star concert" stage setup...

like many others have mentioned, WALKING IN YOUR FOOTSTEPS is now almost a new classic, perhaps the real standout moment of the show and probably their biggest success story out of all the new re-worked song versions... sounds like the original marimba-ish loop from the original Synchronicity album version in a new key; great percussion work in the beginning; very cool guitar work reminiscent of the Pterodactyl noises on the original; then they suddenly get bluesy... Andy doing his best Jeff Beck impersonation... again, a new classic...

CAN'T STAND/REGATTA was very solid... I kinda liked the "I guess this is our last goodbye (2 measures) and you don't care so I won't cry (2 measures)" thing Sting does there...

like I've posted elsewhere, the versions of ROXANNE I've heard so far easily stand up to any version from any previous tour; all three of them definitely pull out all the stops... if for any reason you don't really care for the Grammy version of ROXANNE and are worried that that's how it's played on this tour, rest assured, I think even the most hardcore old-school veteran Police fans will be quite pleased with how it's sounding these days...

KING OF PAIN sounds very solid, the 3rd in the Stewart "percussion riser" trilogy, if you will...

SO LONELY was very nicely re-done... same song, different key... "Welcome to Andy Summers' show/Welcome to Stewart Copeland's show" I felt was very touching...

heck, I even kinda liked EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE...

NEXT TO YOU is a similar version to the one on the Broken Music tour... I did kinda miss the original verse tom beat, though the new 50's "sock-hop-ish" thing is also starting to grow on me... I personally LOVED the new bassline in the chorus.

The tempos could use a bit of a lift throughout the show, to be sure, and some things worked and some things didn't, but I think that's all part of the fun... this was my second time seeing Stewart Copeland performing live (after Oysterhead in Gainesville in 2000 or 2001 I think). Needless to say, I was definitely NOT let down at all... very inspiring... I definitely took alot from watching him that night as well as peering over his shoulder on the 28th from behind the stage.

ps. Oh, how's this for a suggestion (don't think I've read this anywhere else): I kinda miss the vintage Stewart drumset echo/delays. Only surfaced a little bit around the beginning of WALKING ON THE MOON, mainly on the hi-hats. Let's not be timid with those delays on the drums, Stewart!! It's a big part of the sound and part of the magic, for me at least!!
