Hehe, yes Kal, I watched a pre-Led Zep video after watching a few Stanley Clarke vids linked to the one posted here. Thats why it was on my mind ...

I agree with most of those 'splinter' groups, but you didn't like ELP? Do you mean a recent incarnation or the original as well? Even though they became indulgent later on, i love the first 3 or 4 albums from them ...

On a sidenote, that pre-Zep video is the first time I've ever seen the very last days of the Yardbirds (and I have ALL the vids from back then, it seems that this came out recently). With the original lyrics to Dazed and Confused (different from Led Zep) and Keith Relf singing, you can clearly see why that band was going to break up. Music at the time was getting heavier and that is not what Relf or the rest of the band was really about (they were high-energy Blues and R&B). I was excited to watch it, since I havent seen anything new in almost 10 years ...

Oh, I absolutely loved Emerson, Lake and PALMER - until Love Beach, that is and I did buy Black Moon, not bad either - but not Emerson, Lake and POWELL.
I never saw them live, though I caught Greg Lake in the Ringo Starr's All Stars tour in 2003 or so in Concord. It was a great show, very enjoyable, Lake played Welcome back my friends and Epitaph (OMG my v. young days!) pity the keyboard playa was a Howard Jones, who could not have tuned Emerson's piano, let alone play one of his songs. One of my dreams came true then because Ian Hunter of Mott the Hoople sang what was My Generation's anthem "All the Young Dudes"...I got to go crazy under the stage and even got a wink from Greg Lake :!:

I have Heart Full of Soul on video from the Kasey Kasem collection with Keith Relf literally nodding out on the mike and a very fancily dressed Jimmy Page. The Yardbirds were a great group and spunned three of the greatest guitarists ever!

What do you think of the Yardbirds reunion with Page and Beck? I'm kinda a wary of this.

Jeff Beck has an awesome group with VINNIE and Tal Wilkenfeld, this awesome girl bassist...Why should he get together with the Yardbirds? He and Jimmy Page played together at the ARMS concerts and some other benefits, but given Jeff's gracious temper I give the reformed band 10 days'duration!

Well, I'm wary and yet very excited by that, EQ. I saw the Yardbirds about 4 years ago when they played SXSW here. I got to meet Chris Dreja and Jim McCarty - holy SHIT that was cool!! I'm of course a big Police fan, but meeting even these guys (not Page, Clapton or Beck) was like meeting SC or Sting, for me. They were so humorous, cracking jokes and stuff ... they even signed this girls belly, who i met at their concert and didn't really know who they were!

If they played with a band that could capture even half of the energy of Samwell-Smith, Mccarty and Relf in their heyday, it would be as good as seeing The Police was this summer. They were childhood friends, who just had some bad blood from the release of unauthorized songs. Well, that and Jimmy borrowing his idea of taking a powerful lead singer and drummer ... and redoing some of the exact same blues songs on Beck's debut. That and Jimmy playing a similar Tele with almost the same fuzz Beck pioneered ... oh god. I must stop this!

And yes, I still am a huge Page fan :0)

This is the Rolling Stone article on the alleged Yardbirds reunion:

I can see the cover story: "An even more fragile truce"
Aston Family Man Barret of Bob Marley & The Wailers
David Steele of English Beat, Fine Young Cannibals, & Two Men & A Tin Drum
Good calls, Ska Man.

Jah Wobble would be another good outside bet.
