There is hope for young women in music

Postby Hannaha on 10 Jul 2007 21:00
It is, and it's not a bad song, IMO.

Started to mention this over in the "Modern Drummer" thread, which is what made me think of it (folks are discussing the craptacular state of modern journalism there...) One of my criticisms vis a vis MOJO magazine is the lack of inclusion of women artists. I'm almost to the point of suspecting it's done intentionally...I quit buying it regularly a few years ago when they did another one of those stupid lists (300 most influential artists, I think it was) and they had 295 men on it.
There's this weird thing that a lot of muso men have (not all thank god) that women are inherently uncool musically. They usually make an exception for Patti Smith and Kim Deal but often include the latest young sensation on their 'cool lists'. So you'll have Lilly Allen in the top 100 but not Kathleen Hanna or Joni Mitchell. Lily Allen is fine by me but she hasn't proved herself as an influential force in music. By the way - she went up in my estimation so HUGELY when she made her big angry feminist statement slagging off the NME... hang on, let me try and find it for you...

She had a new album out last year I believe. It had a great song on it called Shopping Trolley.
I had the honour of playing in a band supporting her other band, Katastrophy Wife, a few years ago. She was intimidating, magnificent, profoundly peculiar and pissed out of her mind!
You know, she's always casually dropping these really cool stories, y'all...anyone else notice? ;)

Morrisey is my Juliana Hatfields, Jennythenipper, and to a lesser degree I've had problems with John Spencer, of John Spencer Blues Explosion fame, and actor Bruce Cambell. I used to have to see and hear about those guys before, during, and after not having sex.

Do people really fantasize about having sex with Morrissey? Seriously? I mean, talented man, musical legend and everything but not exactly a big bag of puppies in the fun department is he?!

Also, what kind of person tells the man/woman they are having sex with that they are thinking about someone else?!!!! Jeez... sensitivity anyone?

Um, Jon Spencer is pretty awesome. Sorry pt.

Also, his wife Cristina was in a band called Boss Hogg that put out some interesting singles. I saw 'em live a few times back in the 90s.
