Police New songs expectatives

I hope they'll record also some Copeland and Summers songs (well, Andy, please, something like "Someone to talk to", not "Mother" if possible).

On The Beatles, I was thinking the other day, when reading somewhere there was no interest for Sting to record a new album with The Police, that finally the challenge was there: usually, reformed bands do minor records when back together after a too long period.
Unfortunately, for The Beatles, we'll never know but we can imagine it would have been a major record if John and George were still there.

So, wouldn't it be for Sting, and also for Stewart and Andy, the greatest challenge to be the first major band to record a major record, I mean at least as good as Synchronicity, after so many years without playing together? This would be of great interest. After all, The Police recorded only 5 albums. A minor production for a major band.

While I'm really excited about the idea of a new album...unfortunately I don't think it will happen...and that comment Sting recently made about "escaping" is probably true.

That's why I'm glad that they are recording a few new tunes "before" the tour, to help promote a re-release of older material. After what will most likely be a very long tour, I can't see them wanting to jump right into the studio for some more abuse.

As people get older, they may get more laid back....but they also get very set in their ways...and I can see them getting on each others nerves quite easily. Sting has gone all "granola" with the yoga and group hugs and stuff, and Stewart's energy and over the top personality can probably be difficult to take all the time for some people.

What I'd love more than anything is if they just got together occasionally and worked on material just for the pure enjoyment of it. And if anything good came out of it, they could release a song every now and then in a digital download format only, so that there wasn't any great expectation of releasing an album that would compete with their prior work.

I've still got my fingers crossed for a new album, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

I wholeheartedly agree, blueboy. I'd love to see them get truly back together as a full-time gig with albums and tours and stuff -- but they've all got families and film projects and books and other music gigs and SC still has young kids at home and . . .

I will be ecstatic if they just get together once in a while, record a song or two, do a charity concert or festival now and then, maybe some small tour situations, etc -- some occasional thing that hovers in the background. I'm just happy to see that the door to The Police that was shut so tightly has finally cracked open again.
Dramatic highlights & a unique musical cosmos. Guaranteed.

It seems to me there are probably two issues that would confront them if they were going to do new material. One is whether the three of them (and I have to say particularly Stewart probably) are able to keep themselves in check and maintain a good working relationship.

The other is obviously the issue of how they collaborate on the music. Sting left because he wanted the freedom to do things his way, but you would think after about 25 years of doing that, he wouldn't feel as irritated by the prospect of working within the framework of the Police, and letting Stewart and Andy have their input.

If I was to make an argument to Sting in favor of doing a new album, I would point out a few things. First, you wouldn't have as much pressure on you to deliver everything yourself as you do on solo albums. If the old albums are any kind of guide, Stewart and Andy can contribute to the arrangements, write a song or two themselves, and you can throw in a couple of instrumentals for good measure. In other words, doing a new Police album would not be that hard.

Second, things have changed. You have the freedom to come and go from the Police as you please. Doing a Police album does not mean you're back in the same constraints you felt in the old days. You're established as a solo artist, and you're not going to lose any of that by going back to the Police for a while. If anything, you have an opportunity to gain new converts for your solo work.

Third, the Police didn't wear themselves out creatively by doing 30+ albums. There have to be creative energies still stored, and avenues not discovered, that would not be the case for bands that lasted longer.

Finally, it would clearly sell. I don't point that out for monetary reasons, although that doesn't hurt, but because it's obvious from the tour sales that there is still a huge audience for the Police.

As for my personal opinion, I have no doubt they could do a good album, because unlike most other bands that have reached their level (including the Beatles and the Rolling Stones), they are first-rate musicians. All three of them have an in-depth understanding of music and can play the crap out of their instruments. It's not a given that they could crack the pop charts again, but whatever they did would certainly not be crap.
