There is hope for young women in music
Well, not to make a huge deal about it, but I suspect it's still somewhat easier for men to get record deals. I can think of only about three all-woman bands (Sleater Kinney, Shonen Knife, Dixie Chicks) and I can think of about 50,000 all-male acts.
Rasputina is also a 3-woman band. (Plus, they play cellos!) Although I honestly don't know what their record deal status may be.
Dramatic highlights & a unique musical cosmos. Guaranteed.

Two more 3-women bands that came to mind: Betty and Sleater Kinney.

Give my daughter (see avatar) 15 years. I got her the Copeland Vater drumsticks. Now if my wife would only allow me to get that Tama drumkit . . . but everytime I suggest that, she says we have no room in the house for a drumset. My reply is, "What if Stewart Copeland's mom said there was no room in the house for drums"?

Le Tigre. There are lots of all-woman bands but not many are highly successful. And I don't think we need to start defining The Pussycat Dolls as a 'band'!

I liked Julianna Hatfield's record "Only Everything" when it came out in '95. Liked it enough to go see her live that same year, and she was impressive. I haven't heard any or her music since then but I'll bet she's still "got it."

She really does PT! She's done another 5 or 6 albums since then I think and several of them are pure genius. Only Everything is one of her best though. You should check out 'Beautiful Creature', 'Bed' and 'Made In China'. Also her best of comp 'Gold Stars' features a fab cover of Every Breath You Take.

Well thank you, Hannaha. I believe I will check out some of her post-1995 stuff, and I'll start with your recommendations. I had no idea she covered Every Breath You Take. Interesting. I must hear it.

Oh, yeah. Totally. I, of course, just kept having 3-women bands pop into my head throughout the night simply because.

Anyone else remember the L7 tampon incident? *cough*

Haha! YES! I always thought that was pretty damn funny. It scared the hell out of a lot of blokes I think.
As much as I hate manufactured pop I have to say I find Kelly Clarkson pretty tolerable ;)
She's got a great scream on her - not quite Courtney Love or Kat Bjelland but she's got a really ballsy voice.
Thank you for name-check Kat! Twin Cities screamers represent!

OK, so I have this gripe against Juliana Hatfield. This boy I used to date had a giant poster of her in his bathroom and every time I went in there I had to look at her, usually after having not very good sex. So JH always reminds me of that.

OK, probably TMI, but oh well.

Bobbie Lee Gentry? Is that the lady who sang "Ode to Billie Joe" in 1967? Remember: There's no such thing as a stupid question......

It is, and it's not a bad song, IMO.

Started to mention this over in the "Modern Drummer" thread, which is what made me think of it (folks are discussing the craptacular state of modern journalism there...) One of my criticisms vis a vis MOJO magazine is the lack of inclusion of women artists. I'm almost to the point of suspecting it's done intentionally...I quit buying it regularly a few years ago when they did another one of those stupid lists (300 most influential artists, I think it was) and they had 295 men on it.
On Google - site:stewartcopeland.net "your keyword here" - thanks DM!!

Sorry Jenny! You know she did try her best not to be presented as a sex symbol (refusing to do anything other than scowl in press shots for example!) but she's just a rather gorgeous woman and still is. I saw her live last autumn and she was AMAZING and very funny and odd and engaging and apologetic. Made me love her even more.

And nice to see a fellow Bjelland fan! I had the honour of playing in a band supporting her other band, Katastrophy Wife, a few years ago. She was intimidating, magnificent, profoundly peculiar and pissed out of her mind!
