I happened to catch the cover of Roxanne by The Roots. Overall, The Roots were amazing. Aside from the usual lineup, they had a brass section complete with a Sousaphone (spelling?). During a cover of Masters of War, the guitar player and sousaphone player jumped off the stage and ran down between the two sections of the pit. I was about 3rd row against the wall so I saw it literally in front of me.
When they covered Roxanne, some girl came out to play bass instead. ?uestlove did the singing, which was bad, but servicable. I noticed it from the first strums of the Gm chord that they were playing it. I'm not sure if you remember, but ?uestlove was on the Whiskey broadcast with a question about whether they would play some of Sting's solo stuff.
I also read in a magazine one time about his top mix tape, and he included "Once Upon a Daydream." He's a monster fan, aside from also being as cool as Miles Davis.
As far as the concert goes, I pretty much agree with the MTV review actually. I thought they played amazingly well, but it just seemed like the crowd was having a tough time keeping into it after the first 4 songs. They started to slow the set, and the adrenaline from the audience to me was lost. The days are long at Bonnaroo, and if you don't keep the audience moving, exhaustion can set in quickly. I had to laugh when Sting referred to us as being from Tennessee and also mentioning something about Bonnaroo, TN, like it was the name of the city (for those of you that don't know, it's Manchester). Maybe Stewart never really told him what Bonnaroo was. I was able to get into the 5th row of the pit for the show though (we sprinted from Franz Ferdinand's set). I was on Sting's side unfortunately, but at that distance, everyone was easy to see.
They did play a short set, which surprised The Flaming Lips, because they were sound checking during the show. As we walked to their stage for their show, they were playing "War Pigs." My buddies and I only watched the first hour, because we wanted to catch some of GirlTalk (which was awesome) and Sasha and Digweed (they love their electronic music).
I'm looking forward to the St. Louis show, because it will be more of a pure Police crowd. Hopefully the energy will be higher, and they'll play more songs.
