You mean they would NOT have creamed themselves to the mere idea of working with the guy who starred in the Video of the Century, Rose Colored Glasses???
We wouldn't know the name of Sting had it not been for the Police. Period.
This point is easily missed once someone is already famous. The Police was the vehicle Sting needed to emerge as a superstar. Without Stewart or Andy he may never have had a career and vice versa. Who knows, though? Maybe Stewart could have built his pseudo-punk band around other musicians had Sting not been available.

The point is that sum was greater than the parts and Sting was the one who decided to go his own way, thus ending the band's run.

At least Sting is pretty upfront about his intentions. Steve Perry is another great singer who ended his band's career but Journey never knew if he was going to show up or not. This interview is a must read for Journey fans:

One thing I love about Rush is how much they're into what they're doing. It's rare to have that much talent without the explosive egos.

(let's see Sting to Journey to Rush... is this post ADD enough for ya'll?)

Well put
Really, you said what I was trying to say in a way that my poor under-learned high school brain couldn't come up with. Thank you.

TOWOS, I didn't know you were a Curved Air fan before the Police. That's really awesome! I'm sorry my opinion pissed you off, I should have explained myself better. Let's just get past this

One thing I must say though:
Ramuthra - it IS "stewart copeland" dot net; not police, sting, fabulous trios, rock/reggae bands, etc. dot net. No one here is looking for animosity in any form - Stewie's a FUN guy and so are WE (well, that would include fun GALS too, of course) - but if you're looking for a Sting is The Man site, this isn't it. I would suggest, politely, that you simply post accordingly.
Mudderqueen, look: I'm on the SC.net boards rather than Sting boards because I like all you SC nutters far more than any pack of internet Sting fanatics I've come across. You're all so much more interesting and friendly! That's why I post on here. "Post accordingly"???? So I shouldn't say anything unless it conforms directly with the most popular of opinions? I don't really agree with that, and I will continue supporting Sting where I think it's due.

Having said all this, please, please understand that although I worship the man, STING IS A PRETENTIOUS DOUCHEBAG! From Ten Sumner's Tales on, his lyrics have been half-assed and really quite terrible and it's hard to tell if he even cares, or if he's just in it for the money. And yeah, he wronged our favorite other two Policemen numerous times over the years, and that's no good. He's still an amazing and vastly influencial musician.

As for Stewart's drumming abilities? He is the best in the world in my opinion. More style and flare than any other. And because of that, again, I have my own copies of close to all post-police solo work from throughout the years. Please don't question my loyalty!

I love Li'l Ramuthra Meshugganeh!!! I am not pissed off at all, this is only the way I write...You haven't seen me really PO LOL

One thing, though. The fact that I knew CA way before the Police (actually, before Stewart joined) makes me feel like a bit like Tutankamen...

Ramuthra - no, no - all I meant was, when given the option, always give credit to Stewart even where possibly not due because...well, just because :) and of course I'm not really serious - only kind of. And your description of Sting as a pretentious douchebag was the BEST - way worth reading all the posts to get to! I heart you mucho, young lady. You are always willing to stick up for y' own self (myspace friend), and I admire the hell out of that.

And I still insist on eeking brothers Miles and Ian in every chance I get because I think the success and impact of The Police would have been much slower in coming were it not for those 2.

... Simple. I was a tween and once listened to It Happened Today and bought the (then) LP, I wanted to be Sonja Kristina! 8)

ETA: This version, btw, is the best.

Yeah, no worries, Ramuthra. You have the right to your opinion....it's just a friendly discussion. Seriously. Nobody is trying to tell you to cram it where the sun don't shine, or that you don't have the right to defend Sting if you want to.

You just gotta expect people to bring it, if you post a controversial statement around here, is all, I think.

That said, it's awesome to see some folks come out of the woodwork who've been a little quiet lately, so thanks for bringing this up. ;) For realz.

I think DirtyMartini absolutely nails this one. Awesome post. Should be the final word, IMO - - -BUT - I can't help but continue this! :P

Something has always bugged me about this debate - the notion that Sting somehow betrayed Stewart by going solo because it was Stewart's band. Huh? Does it mean that since the Police was Stewart's concept, Sting should have remained in the band until Stewart saw fit to release him?

I'm personally glad he left when he did, for a couple of reasons:
1) The guy is not a collaborator. It's been said ad nauseum, and it's true. Wishing it otherwise is pointless - the fact is, Stewart and Andy were slowly but surely being relegated to supporting roles, and that's something I wouldn't want to see.

2) If Sting drifted into musical irrelevance after 10ST (a point I agree with) then the same fate would have befallen The Police had he stayed (DSSCTM 86 anyone?). Again, something I wouldn't want to see.

I honestly believe, love him or hate him, Sting is true to himself (TOWOS, you can't seriously believe he thought the Lute thing would sell millions and resuscitate his career!). The Reunion is a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't scenario. Had it not have happened, we could have all gone on endlessly saying "What a fucking bastard Sting is - why won't he reunite???". Now that it did happen, we get to say, "What a fucking bastard Sting is - he only did it for the coin!" At the end of the day though, what I can take comfort in is that The Police have a great, untarnished body of work that will be a part of music history forever, and I finally got a chance to see them play live! :D

I’m not trying to perpetuate this and I have gone off on a bit of a tangent here:
Individually, Stewart, Andy and Sting are virtuosos by their own merit – period. Combined, they are a formidable trio that, after all these years, can still take care of business and truly leave each one of us totally awe struck.
I see the relationship they have/had with each other as symbiotic. Each of them benefits in one way or another from what the others bring to the table – be it song writing ability, drumming, guitar strumming or playing the gong damned lute. Kind of like on Nova or in the pages of Nation Geographic were you see that little bird in the crocodile’s mouth picking at its teeth. I’ll leave it up to you to decide who’s who picking at who’s what’s-it’s because each of them is the little bird and the crocodile. Sounds a bit hokey but that’s my g-rated Wild Kingdom / Marlin Perkins take on part of this.
Vaughn, you don’t have to account to anyone here about your degree of loyalty – now go out and get that GITM tattoo you were talking about! 8)
I agree with Ramuthra: I'm pretty sure I'd never have heard of Stewart Copeland had he never met Sting.

I also agree with thedaner: I'm pretty sure I'd never have heard of Sting had he never met Stewart Copeland.....

Of course, it's also possible each one of them would have been bigger than sliced bread without each other, but judging just from the facts that we've got, I dunno.

It's all very It's A Wonderful Life.......

But while I don't think that The Police is who they are anymore, I do think that being The Police is in a lot of ways what made them who they are now.

You kiddin'me? Guy is sure that his devotees would purchase an album of his bodily noises if he put it out. And, because I am a fan, not of his but a fan, I am pretty sure they would.

I read a more PC version of this statement in the New Yorker today - an article on Beyonce that said that the lady in question after Destiny's child has what they call in the biz "pulled a Sting", which means that (s)he could never reach the level of masterful songwriting (which I never denied him) but has created his solid niche of fans over the years that buy everything just to complete the collection.

Nobody has mentioned "betrayal" for Gong's sake: "self serving" and "opportunist" are the terms used, and I do believe that Sumnah is an intelligent man and had no problems or qualms about admitting this.

Anyhoo, the world is beautiful for its variety, and each one of us perceives things differently.

Shoulda Coulda Woulda...The band is gone and we will never know the answer (I don't think the 86 quote is worth a mention, given that Stewart was injured and it was only a botched attempt, but the fans bought it anyway).

Well I didn't want to add to this thread, but I gotta say thank you, as I had never seen The Police BTM before

Really enjoyed it.

Also I love that we can opine on this board, have a heated discussion and still come out of the otherside without the flame wars.
