Look, I have to give big props to artists who are trying to bridge the rap/hiphop and rock divide that is still pretty alarmingly cavernous. Loved Aerosmith and Run DMC for one of the earlier cracks, Anthrax with PE, and so on. It's not uncharted territory by any means but I do think that there's more to be done. At this point, honestly, no one quite owns it like the Roots, it's no surprise that ?uestlove is a fan of hard rock and the Police as well as soul, funk, r&b etc. The Police and Kanye West I see it as part of the same thing, intended or not...It's another way for rock to recognize it's own roots, too since hip/hop and rock do emerge not from alltogether different lines. And that's not to even mentioning the interlacing lineages of reggae and ska, etc.
More productive hip/hop rock crossover can be done, it's pretty sweet territory when done well and when the streams are crossed, interesting things can happen.
I have always been interested in rap, hip/hop since SugarHill Gang, Fab 5 Freddy and GM Flash but heh, I understand it's not everyone's cup of tea...old school is not that incompatible with what we think of as rock but ideologically the paths have pretty significantly diverged, even though fans may listen to both...I like it when they are brought together, personally...I am not a "purist" of anything, everything I have always liked has always already been a hybrid of something or another in the first place <grin> *Especially* the Police <cheshire grin>
MMMMEEEEEOOOOOOWWWWWW!!!!
