Dumbest thing I've ever seen

Postby DirtyMartini on 09 Jul 2007 14:40

I gotta say -- I just rewatched "MIAB" on youtube, and I think it's a kick. Yeah, I would have preferred to see Chuck D or Snoop Dogg or a dozen others. But even if KW wasn't very good, he was having a great time. He was out of his league, but he was all smiles like a kid in a candy store, and he helped kick the energy into high gear.

And of course, the line about them being the only good Police in the hood is an instant classic.
Dramatic highlights & a unique musical cosmos. Guaranteed.

I watched it again this morning, and I realized that the rap or whatever he was guy wasn't actually wearing sunglasses. Weird that he came out there in front of all those people and didn't even do what he does best.

He did have sneakers on, though. That was really compelling.

Hold on a sec - this gets even more odd...

What's got most Police fans knickers in a twist is that KW did not need to be there. At the end of the day, he was and I'll guess I'll just have to get over it.

Bongoboy brought up a good point about Andy.

After the performance, and most of the rage settled down, I couldn't help but think of the same thing. Looking at the video again, I get the feeling that Andy was sickened by it. After all, this is a man with some storied history in music. He jammed with Hendrix for Christ sake! Now, at this historic concert, he's forced to play second banana to the musical equivalent of a banana and it's just not right.

In the 3 party system of the Police, Stew and Andy were probably outvoted.

Look, I have to give big props to artists who are trying to bridge the rap/hiphop and rock divide that is still pretty alarmingly cavernous. Loved Aerosmith and Run DMC for one of the earlier cracks, Anthrax with PE, and so on. It's not uncharted territory by any means but I do think that there's more to be done. At this point, honestly, no one quite owns it like the Roots, it's no surprise that ?uestlove is a fan of hard rock and the Police as well as soul, funk, r&b etc. The Police and Kanye West I see it as part of the same thing, intended or not...It's another way for rock to recognize it's own roots, too since hip/hop and rock do emerge not from alltogether different lines. And that's not to even mentioning the interlacing lineages of reggae and ska, etc.

More productive hip/hop rock crossover can be done, it's pretty sweet territory when done well and when the streams are crossed, interesting things can happen.

I have always been interested in rap, hip/hop since SugarHill Gang, Fab 5 Freddy and GM Flash but heh, I understand it's not everyone's cup of tea...old school is not that incompatible with what we think of as rock but ideologically the paths have pretty significantly diverged, even though fans may listen to both...I like it when they are brought together, personally...I am not a "purist" of anything, everything I have always liked has always already been a hybrid of something or another in the first place <grin> *Especially* the Police <cheshire grin>

I completely agree. There should be more of it. When it's done well, like in your examples, it's very fun and very cool.

Too bad this was NOT one of those times. Kanye is just TERRIBLY bad, and he dragged the Police down to his level. The only element that was a saving grace in that performance was Stewart, who obviously didn't give a crap about the guy screwing up a great song, and played it like he always does.

The Police can be very well integrated with world music, and several other genres. I think shoving them into a hip-hop environment to artificially try and create a multicultural melting pot is a horrible mistake, and this thing with Kanye was probably the best evidence of that.

I do not mean to be negative about Hip Hop.

The reason I got so worked up is....out of ALL the rappers....it was KW !

That's all I meant....anyone else...anybody at all...no problem, I don't mind trying something like that....but..

You know how it is when you have an Actor or singer or Band that for some reason...you HATE them.

Y'know like Celine Dion...heh, heh...we sent her to you guys in The U.S.A. ....heh, ENJOY !!!!

So I don't mean to be slaggin everything but that KW guy is such a jerk, I mean The Police are GOOD people...to me...he is the opposite. Have you seen some of his video's...Holy in my own world Batman !!!. I am surprised he doesn't just perform in front of a mirror everynight.

What I find very interesting is how a bunch of us here have different opinions...but we all Love The Police. I think that's really cool !

I hated KW solo set too.

some of you really liked it though.

Interesting how music is.

When I watched KW solo set of his own stuff, I thought it was nice that he put in the effort, running around n stuff...but the songs?...the words?....I don't get it. He's kinda the "Fergie" of rap for me....groove and look good but who needs any lyrics.

I agree about merging music though...I hope it never stops.

"Cheers and respect to everyone, even people who drink and like KW !"

kidding, kidding, heh.

Right. I'd possibly enjoy seeing the Police with a good hip-hop artist. But I don't want to see/hear ANYONE with Kanye. For the life of me, as a musician, a producer, and a listener, I can't understand why anyone finds that guy to be talented.

At the same time, I don't begrudge anyone for musical taste, or any other subjective judgement call. What's the "best" flavor of ice cream? Who's the "best" impressionist artist?

Perhaps its only in my own mind that Kanye just entirely blows.

So true...

I try...he just so....Hate-able !

...he said "raise your hands in the air and wave em like...."

Sting should have yelled out "sex drugs and rock n roll"

why can't I just let it go !

Ok. Done.

Yep. As soon as I saw this one I knew it was gonna leave skid marks on the bowl. Don't forget, The Police were performing with umpteen other artists and had to appease the masses including Police/Copeland fans like us, rapper fans, Madonna fans like Phaty and all stops in between.

In the spirit of Tonydrums, I'm going to go spray agent orange all over the old growth trees that are blocking my view of the slag heap from the lead smelter and maybe later go skinny dipping in the heavy water.

One of the main featured items on MSN.com is a link to the Live Earth Message in a Bottle and it is labled as a "Super Jam You Cannot Miss" or something like that.

Don't get me wrong, I'd never even hint that KW is of the same caliber as Chuck D, I just think them all being on the stage together does something on its own, in, at least for a moment, bringing the fans together. And not just in some happy horseshit way, neither. It seems so many were responding on principle about this show that I'd throw in my own minute view on what them together on stage could do, in principle, especially since (although just in my perception: warning assertion ahead) hip/hop has given rock more credit than the other way round, something that I think is due...I mean KW did give the Police huge props, after all and he has pretty significant cultural capital, surely...
