Bed's Too Big Without You live

Postby luddite lady on 08 Mar 2009 05:32

Thanks for the link, SJR. Until now, I had not heard the '07 version of Bed's. The song had already been cut by the time I saw my first show and I have no boots from early in the tour. I can see why most people were disappointed when it was dropped from the setlist. It definitely has got a certain something. I imagine there has been much spectulation about this, but has anybody found a substantial reason for dumping it? What song replaced it?
In Dallas, the only game that really mattered was in the word gamelan.

I think "Hole In My Life" replaced it.

What bugs me on the 07/08 version is the fact that although it is adventurous, it is not such a departure from the 79 version. (Except for the intro that does not work, for me) It is just not as inspired, but this is a matter of taste and personal opinion. I really miss Stewart snare figure, it sounds kind of strange without it, to me...

FWIW, I find it a little odd that you mention that it's not a departure, and then mention two distinct ways in which it WAS different than the '79 version.

My all time favorite version of this tune is from the BBC (Or maybe it's Capitol) sessions in '79. The one where Stewart get's the snare / delay happening, and Sting goes: "That's nice, Stewart!". I'm with you, Mario. I love that snare figure.

My second fave version was from the Dress Rehearsal in '07. I, myself kind of like the double time beginning. And I thought Andy's delay/harmonizer stuff on the breakdown was the BOMB! I remember my mouth being completely agape at that one.

As Sting says: "I think God rewards the risk taker".
Ehhh... I think Sting thinks he's much more of a risk taker than he actually is.

On the subject of THE '07, I have nothing good to say.

On the subject of songs that may have been 'best' on the reunion tour, I'd have to say ELTSDIM. I don't think they've ever done it better. Heck, before '07, I don't really think they'd made it fly live at all. I also thought FOOTSTEPS was great notwithstanding the lack of grooviness on the double time stuff at the end.

EBYT, despite being a song I don't really dig that much, could arguably be called better than on Synch tour. And maybe Synch 2?

And if you like guitar solos, then the reunion version of DRIVEN was the best ever. That song was a consistent bright spot on the 07/08 tour, me thinks.

I agree with all of your choices.
Synch 2 was so much better this time with the 1/2 time beat during "grips the wheel and stares alone..." That slowing of the beat made the next part twice as exciting when they brought the beat back.

Footsteps was completely reworked and also for the better although I have no problem with the '83-'84 version.

Probably my favorite was ELTSDIM.
I saw it first in Dallas and that ending samba part was outstanding. It seemed to go on longer than it did elsewhere, and it was 3 guys doing what they do best.

I thought Wrapped was garbage...and DSSCTM was grazing music. Really very boring stuff.

Thats all I can think of...

And while we are at it, I have a better appreciation for Invisible Sun 07-08 than the Synch tour version.

Synch tour version e-yo's just doesn't seem right with the backing singers.

I like the more sparseness of the 07-08

Heresy! That had STEWART's best percussion work.

He was all over that assortment of bells and whistles...just not my thing I guess. Its fun to hear on WIYF 1983

I felt Stewart's 2007 best was MIAB.

I am with you. The hightlight for me of Hollywood Bowl #2 was ELTSDIM. When I saw the Tele on the big screen was amazing. Shout out to you and Empty for showing me such a fun time, and Empty for the ticket.
And I love the version on Certifiable, that bit at the end is awesome.

Sorry EQ, still can't get into Invisible Sun. On Tourzilla that song was my bathroom break, grab a beer(or two) and get geared up for the end of the show. Tried to listen to it on Certifiable, still can't get into it.

And speaking of end of the show, I am with you to on EBYT. HB #2 I was singing so loud to it a woman turned from the row in front of me and told basically told me to shut up. Hey, at least I didn’t spill any of the two beers on her!

I meant percussion. So of KOP, Wrapped, and Walking in Your Footsteps, Wrapped was the best.

I say his best drumming on this tour was some nights during Can't Stand Losing You.

I think the beginning of Beds has the same negative effect on the song (to me) as the beginning of Synch II. The noodling just takes a slight edge off of the song, makes it seem less urgent. The rest of the song may blow door down (in the words of The D) but it just seems like the song started off on the wrong foot.

The polar opposite it is the start of Walking on the Moon - cuts right to the bone from note one.

Just my 2 cents whilst procrastinating from doing work.
Thanks for the post, but in my humble opinion, it is not as good as the 79 Boston live version. I kind of understand why it was removed from the set list.
LOL
yes, sting had a good listen to the police live record and told stewart and andy that they played that one better in '79. man, if every song on the reunion tour was compared with their 'vintage' performances as a way of deciding whether or not they should be included in the set, i daresay the set would have become rather short. with all due respect and kudos to your appreciation of the police, your comment is quite ridiculous. we ALL know the police sounded better before all the key changes, before andy's guitar tone went to hell, before sting insisted that most songs were played to a click track and before the tempos were all slowed down by 25%. the police sounded better in 1979? REALLY? wow, i'll have to go back and listen to some of those bootlegs!

Was Andy's guitar tone really that bad on the reunion tour? Maybe its just me, but I thought it was pretty freaking great at times.

Andy's guitar tone was fucking awesome.
Too bad the only place you could hear it was right in front of him.

i agree, dan, that ELTSDIS was good, all the more for the times when andy didn't fluff the start riff! >ducks<...

odd that a song which never really seemed to fit in with the p'leece 'sound' did so well on this tour, whereas a song which, in '79, sounded ACE like 'Hole In My life' didn't quite work for me once it had had the pace taken out of it; felt at times like a threesome that wasn't gelling!

VERY glad that gordo's idea to start MIAB quietly bit the dust, now that was a crappy idea....

it was a shame that the setlist was so fixed that we got excited when demolition man started to get played towards the end.
