Ditto!

"Thanks Dive for your input and quite correct so when I have a Sting moment who I do deeply respect i will email TOWOS instead "

Bring it on, babes, the Shark is Hungry... :P :P :P You're welcome anytime!

You certainly did not offend anyone who loves Stewart. And, guess what, in his holy of holiest Stingo does know that what we say is true. He never made a mystery of it ("I'm out for myself and they know it", right?).
He might be all I think, but he's no dummy.

TWENTY FIVE years ago. Let. It. Go.

I wonder if there's still people sitting around cursing Lennon (or McCartney depending on who you believe) for breaking up the Beatles.

Oh, Max, sure they are. There are still some that debate if Old Blue Eyes was really a Mobster. Or if Elvis was abducted by Aliens and Will Return One Day.

*BTW, animal, it was Allen Klein who broke up the Beatles, along with John and Yoko...

TOWOS, Dive!

Slow down you guys! All I'm doing is sticking up for Sting, something no one really does around here. I know he's a pompous bastard, but I just don't think you guys quite give him enough respect.

Don't get me wrong! I love Stewart! Very very much. I have a vast collection of all his sountracks, various records (Klark Kent, The Rythmatist) have my own copy of Everyone Stares, etc. Hell I even watch Stewart's drum kit angle on my copy of "Certifiable" whenever the option's available.

I respect your point of view, and wasn't trying to criticize it. It seems to be more you folks who don't respect mine...

Ramuthra - it IS "stewart copeland" dot net; not police, sting, fabulous trios, rock/reggae bands, etc. dot net. No one here is looking for animosity in any form - Stewie's a FUN guy and so are WE (well, that would include fun GALS too, of course) - but if you're looking for a Sting is The Man site, this isn't it. I would suggest, politely, that you simply post accordingly.

Ram,

I will try to make myself clear again, because I am a patient motherly type (NOT!)
You have every right to support Sting (and, btw, the Internets are full of StingYessir.com boards), like him, love him, and respect him as an artist (the latest, btw, we ALL do, you know that, don't you?).

But IMHO (In MY Humble Opinion) you CANNOT come on Stewart's board and say that we would never heard of him if it weren't for Sting.

Facts:
. I, for one, had heard of Stewart before I heard of Sting.

. Stewart invited Sting to London to join the Police. Yes, I know the Stingers'argument (and Gohdo's) here is that Sting would have gone to London anyway. Guess What? London has always been FULL of extremely talented people who do not, or did not, had the contacts of the Copelands, Stewart's confidence that never wavered, 2 brothers who knew the ropes in the music business, AND were absolutely monster drummers with a vision of what was changing the music scene.

. Stewart founded the Police, broke his back doing ALL of the propaganda work, borrowed money to record their first single, put up posters himself, Miles was the one who brought Roxanne to a major, and Ian booked their US tours. Sting did nothing but bitch about the fact that they weren't making enough money to support his wife and child (Gohd could very well have survived as an actor and model thanks to his wife's own contacts). So by all means the Police was STEWART's brainchild. For Sting, it was only an opportunistic move to get noticed and show his talent.

. "I'm going join Billy Ocean on the cruise ship if we don't find a paid gig soon". "I'm out for myself and they know it".

. Stewart is one of the most respected, copied, and inspirational drummers ever existed. All this not only because of the Police, but of his remarkable career as a drummer, a composer, an arranger, a film scorer.

. All of what Dive mentioned that happened in the latest tour. Which, without the diplomatic skills of the luv'ly lady, I will translate in Towosspeak, paraphrasing the "surprise people, surprise myself":
"I woke up one morning, and thought "what can I do to revive my flagging career because I haven't been musically relevant for over 15 years and my lute album - not a single original composition but a medieval music lover's effort - hasn't sold s**t and the fans aren't happy?" "REFORM THE POLICE!" (which Stewart, despite his protestation of the Trophy Forgotten in the Garage etc, had wanted for 20 years - there are zillion of interviews to prove it).

. Stewart is the first to be in awe of Sting's musical talent. AFTER ALL, HE ONLY DISCOVERED HIM...

. Sting has never reciprocated the above. I will not say what I really think here to make you happy.

. Nobody has said Ramuthra's musical tastes suck or he's an idiot or anything that disrespects you. Methinks you have been a not-so-good guest in STEWART's house.

(sigh of relief). Got it, now???? Hope so.
Peace out.

Okay - then I'll throw my additional 2 cents worth in. The Police were, in my opinion, basically a Copeland Brothers Production. Stewart was the machine, his brothers the motor. Chances are both Stewart and Sting would ultimately have come into the public eye in big way. Both are phenomenally talented (though Stewart's gifts are more diverse and he could have broken through in any number of genres). Who knows? -maybe we would have known him as a world class polo player, something I still just cannot wrap my head around; Stewart the Aristocrat. I like Stewart the musically gifted goofball who made all the Police videos way more fun to watch.

It was a group effort of varying proportions, but I don't think there is any question but that it was largely the dynamic the Stewart, Ian, and Miles trio that established and drove the band we know as The Police.

Now, PLEASE - can't we all just get a bong?

I agree with Ramuthra: I'm pretty sure I'd never have heard of Stewart Copeland had he never met Sting.

I also agree with thedaner: I'm pretty sure I'd never have heard of Sting had he never met Stewart Copeland.

(I think Andy I probably would have heard of eventually, but not to such an extent.)

I had heard of Stewart's early work *after* I had heard of The Police. That's my circumstances. For a bunch of younger folks born after The Police broke up, many have only heard of The Police because of the various solo efforts, such as Sting's solo work or Stewart's film or video game soundtracks. But for me, The Police is why I originally know either of them, and the Police itself couldn't exist without both of them.

Had those specific three guys never met, collaborated, and become The Police, who knows what they would be doing today. Their talents would remain intact, but their paths and the opportunities that would or wouldn't have resulted? Hard to say. Seems likely that Sting would still be playing music that I wouldn't listen to anyway (so no big difference there), but Stewart -- I think that's anybody's guess. He got the Rumble Fish gig in no small part because he was a rock star in that famous trio. (I personally doubt being in Curved Air would have won him that opportunity.) So without the door that opened because of the Police, would Stewart have spent the last 20ish years as a composer? Hard to say. If not for The Police, would Klark Kent have emerged? Hard to say. If Les Claypool and Trey Anastasio hadn't have been Police fans, would Oysterhead exist? (Forgive me, Stewart, but) I can't really picture either of them saying "I'll cream myself if we can get that guy from Animal Logic." Assuming Animal Logic would have existed. And on and on.

Of course, same goes had Andy not come along. Would Sting, Stewart, and Henry have made it big? Much as I like Henry, I've got my doubts. I'm pretty confident that if not for Andy Summers, I probably never would have heard of Sting or Stewart Copeland.

Of course, it's also possible each one of them would have been bigger than sliced bread without each other, but judging just from the facts that we've got, I dunno.

It's all very It's A Wonderful Life.

Obviously I wouldn't agree had Ramuthra said that Stewart would be "nothing" without Sting or that he would lack in talent or ability without Sting -- but as fame goes (and the likelihood of it), I mostly agree with him: Sting and Stewart (and Andy) made each other famous. That combination was the Big Break for all of them. Does that mean there are fewer things that I disagree with Sting on? No, and I'm fine with expressing my disagreement. Does that mean that there are fewer things that I disagree with Stewart on? No, and I'm fine with expressing my disagreement there, too. Lord knows I've bitched plenty. I think it's good that they once got together, and I think that it's good that they went their separate ways: they've done some stellar work without each other, and they shouldn't have to work in an unsavory situation. IMO, there's been more than enough of that, which is one of the reasons why I'm so fine w/ them not continuing on. But while I don't think that The Police is who they are anymore, I do think that being The Police is in a lot of ways what made them who they are now.

Thanks for all those links, EQ.
Dramatic highlights & a unique musical cosmos. Guaranteed.
