New York / Los Angeles & Dietmar

For NYC vegetarian, one day vespa and I stumbled into Candle 79 after a long session at the Met..."poor" vespa having to go vegetarian for a meal! It was great stuff all around, and we learned before leaving that apparently it's one of Paul McCartney's favorite places to eat in NYC, too...

I feel certain I saw the Seurat in Chicago, but perhaps it's traveled.
Anyway it doesn't hurt to check the web sites of the major museums a week or two before you get here and see what special exhibitions are in town. Sometimes it's good to check on this stuff before you arrive so you can plan accordingly.

Don't worry, we'll make sure you are well fed during your stay. Am happy to meet you for lunch OR dinner at Fat Annie's as I work close by.

Yep, La Grande Jatte lives in the Art Institute here. But there's PLENTY to see at the Met! The Tiffany is spectacular.

Thanks, Lynne. I was there at the end of the Hopper/Homer exhibition and it was a bit crazy. Thought I'd seen it somewhere but then doubted myself! :D
The Met also has Monet's Water Lillies if that hasn't been mentioned yet.

I have mixed feelings about the Egyptian collection at the Met. It's wonderful, but all that stuff really belongs in Cairo. Just sayin'.

Luckily, the L.A. County museum is terrific as well. They've got some ancient Indian art that's just fabulous. So's the Getty, which is probably more a choice for those who like more traditional, representational artwork. They have the largest important pastel drawing in the world. The frame alone is worth a visit.

Another of my favorites:

And the building itself is beautiful.

Not sure if I'll be able to make it or not, but I'll try.

The Getty has some nice stuff, though if we're gonna talk about controversial and questionable practices in acquiring a collection, well...the Getty's way up there on THAT list!

But it's a gorgeous complex and taking the tram up there is definitely a highlight of any trip to LA...

Shoot, now I'm starting to hanker for an LA visit myself...

Anyway, at the Met my favorite is the European painting wing, mostly the Renaissance-era stuff and Dutch masters. There are some wonderful Rembrandts in their collection, along with some gorgeous Italian masterworks. I'm also a bit of a geek for the pre-Renaissance religious work if just for the incredible techniques.

With the current airfare and hotel sales, I was thinking the same thing.

Don't tempt me - I need a vacation!

There is also always space for Nutters to visit in Colorado. There aren't as many museums or hip restaurants as NYC or LA. But there are some pretty mountains and stuff.

Dietmar and Empty - let me know when the LA gathering is and I'll try to make it down from my northern abode. Empty - you won't have to put me up unless I drink too much. ;) I'm sure we can lure Charlie Arnold, Muse and some other Cali people for a mini CA/Germany Nutter party. YAY!!

Getty is a must for anyone who comes to LA.
Also, there is a new Grammy museum that just opened as part of the new downtown complex LA Live. I went over the holidays and it was really awesome. A little pricey, you have to buy a ticket for a timed entrance, and pay for parking but they have a lot of cool stuff on display. And studio rooms where you can make your own recording.
Although it is a little weird when you take your kids and tell them about the music you grew up on and it is on display in a museum.
Have we got touchdown

Something else brewing in NYC in April...my guy John Glover is going to be in the revival of Waiting for Godot with previews beginning April 3 -- along with Nathan Lane, Bill Irwin, and John Goodman. Looks to be awesome with that cast.

I'll definitely be going (no doubt more than once) between April and July. Any other folks who might want to join me, give a holler and I can see about getting tickets and when...

I'll pass...

my brother is an actor and when I grew up I saw him in a lot of plays (Shakespeare, Tennessee Williams, Bertolt Brecht, Moliere, bla bla bla) - so by now I know that it's just not my cup of tea!
