OH.
MY.

help me!
*melts into a puddle*

that pic alone is worth $20!

I *really* wish I was older than 12 during this time (and independently wealthy). I may have chased The Police around the globe for that swimsuit.

Fantastic news! I loved Lynn Goldsmith's book. And I've been feeling sad that my copy got trashed years ago along with some other precious Police memorabilia I used to have. I am so buying that new book!

And thank you for the picture sockii. That's definitely the Stewart I fell in love with all those years ago. Just more nude. Woo-hoo! :o

i got my copy at the midnight release of harry potter at the borders store - full price of course - along with several other books because i can't be left in a bookstore for more than 15 min. without picking up random stuff.

i have a "thing" about lynn goldsmith. i don't think her photographs are that great. she's made a bunch of money & got some nice shots simply because she had access to the band because she was screwing sting. maybe the history just makes them seem cheap to me. like the photos of him hailing a cab and buying movie tickets, etc.. bleh! boring & you can tell that she idolized him from her choice of shots.

am i the only one who feels that way?

i do love the photos at monserrat during GITM like sockii said and i love the ones of stewart roller skating! i'm a roller freak. i also like the ones of andy because he is a ham...

it's a must for any police fan.

Oh. My. Stars.

That is quite the way to start the day.

My book is ordered and will be delivered by my UPS man (whose legs are good but not Stewart good) on Monday.

Whew.

policerule-

I tend to agree with you to an extent. I really like some of her photos, but I don't find them as "poetic", I guess, as I do Andy's own pictures (nor as natural and unguarded as, say, Danny Q's pics in his book).

Photography's a tricky art to me...there are some photographers whose work I can identify as soon as I see it and to me they are the artists who stand out (Andy, Annie Leibovitz, etc...) I don't find Lynn's work so easily identifiable or unique. But that said, there are still some lovely images in the new book and I find it less "pretentious" than I did her first Police photobook in the '80s.

Oh well. Here's one more pic to send the girls into a tailspin, and since we're all no doubt buying our copies now, right?

eh hem... i like that one too.

sounds like we might understand each other sockii. i might not drum or know graphic arts or computers, but i think i know photography and her work just isn't up to snuff in my book for someone who is as popular as she is. her photos are posed and unnatural. they lack spontaneity. stiff. and i might be wrong here, but aren't photos supposed to be in focus for the most part? i mean, there are times you take artistic license, but not while they are stitting at a table! you know which one i'm talking about. she's a rock photographer. she's a groupie. ah, but who isn't? ok, i'm a hypocrite. i'm done criticizing lynn.

danny's book was better.

i haven't seen andy's yet, but i'm going to his exhibit on saturday and i have his cheaper version pre-ordered, so we'll see, but i do love his stuff.

Well, Andy could be taken to task for the blurryness at times, but I don't know. It works for me in his images because it gives them an abstract or surreal feeling at times--sometimes so abstract that they are no longer about the subject photographed but just the interplay of light, dark, and shadow. Many of his other photos tell such a story, they go beyond what you see on the surface and leave you thinking about what was going on in the moment he captured. That, to me, is what makes them art instead of mere snapshots.

Posing and unnaturalness is not necessarily a detraction...let me give an example (and shamelessly pimp a friend of mine!) Kyle Cassidy is a phenomenal Philly photographer who creates amazing "staged" images as well as capturing spontaneous moments as well. He's another one whose photos I can recognize instantly. He's done a lot of work for the Dresden Dolls as well as other bands, you can see some of his stuff here:

http://www.kylecassidy.com/pix/portfolio/index.html

and he has a new book out that's really cool - staged shots for the most part but again they all tell a story:

http://www.armedamerica.org/

Anyway...didn't mean to hyjack this thread into art criticism/comparison discussion. But basically while I'd have no problem seeing Andy's work in a gallery exhibit, I'm not sure I'd say the same for a lot of Lynn's pictures. There is perhaps that hint of a groupie "taint" to them, maybe that's part of the reason like you said. I dunno.

But I ain't complaining about all the near nudie shots!

 :P

wow yeah, i like his stuff... great color! can't compare though - you can do so much with digital images.

armed america - political as well... very nice.

hey - you don't have to worry about hijacking the thread - it's yours!
