Colaiuta covering Stewart
Interesting article on the subject: http://www.vinniecolaiuta.com/articles/ ... mer93.aspx

By the way, learned on his website that vinnie has played on albums by Lindsay Lohan, Hillary Duff, Clay Aiken, and the Backstreet Boys. Hilarious
Yeah, he's played with just about everyone out there... he's actually on an entire Megadeth album (The System Has Failed, 2004), believe it or not!!

That Vinnie can do it all....here's some unplugged material with Vinnie, and Sting is playing Brian!!

Pretty mundane (on Vinnie's end) until the end of the tune, but if you can find the whole video I highly recommend it. Vinnie does this thing where he chicks his hi-hats with the left foot periodically in different spots of the drum grooves throughout this performance. It has a specific name that I can't recall, but it sure is a lot of fun to watch and gives the beat a unique sound and feel.

Omar Hakim ...would have loved to see his versions of "The Police" classics.
That guy was amazing to watch. I caught him with Sting in Berkeley 1985. Burn For You and Driven To Tears come to mind. Demolition Man. That guy could play. I remember he had lights in each of his drums and they would flash on and off. It looked like he was in a space ship.
Omar Hakim is the closest thing to Stewart as far as spontaneous drumming I've seen. I have a video of Omar playing with Weather Report at the Playboy Jazz fest at the Hollywood Bowl in 1982. Omar just smiles brilliantly and plays on the edge the entire time. He looks so happy! Like Stew, It's obvious he just enjoys life and playing his drums! BTW his "Burn for you" solo w/ Sting is only available on import or only on Sting's film Bring On The Night which I did like.

"ring, ring"

Vinnie: "Hello?"

Stewart: "<squalk> (cough) Vinnie?"

Vinnie: "Yes?"

Stewart: "Can you cover for me tonight? (cough) <squalk>"

Vinnie: "The Detroit show?"

Stewart: <squalk> "Yes, I'm not feeling well. (cough)"

Vinnie: "Sure thing Stewart. Just let me call Sting."

"ring, ring"

Sting: "Hello?"

Vinnie: "Sting, it's Vinnie. Hey, listen, Stewart is not feeling well and he wants me to cover for him tonight."

Sting: "Is he nervous about playing the Palace. I know it's intimidating for a lot of musicians..."

Vinnie: "No, I think he's worried about turning into a green blob."

Sting: "OH, a legitimate concern! Well... As long as you have the wig, dress and high heels on, I don't think anyone will notice. Do you need any lipstick?"

Vinnie: "Yes"

Sting: "Ask Stewart for his."

Vinnie: "He's out."

Sting: "You can use mine then."

Vinnie: "Thanks, Sting. You're the best!"

Sting: "I know, I know."

I know for fact that Stewart said of Abe Laboriel : " It was rather embarrassing to watch such a good drummer as Abe do an impersonation...of ME !"
