The following body contains comments about the performance. I plan to tell you mostly what happened and not so much my opinion on what I think could improve (like most others).
BUT IF ANY OF YOU ARE GOING TO A POLICE SHOW SOON, HEED THIS ADVICE TO IMPROVE YOUR EXPERIENCE:
1. Be very happy and satisfied The Police are playing together again.
2. Other than Roxanne, Walking, Message, CSLY/Regatta,Wrapped, KOP, EBYT most songs are majorly re-arranged with new chords, extended intros/outros. You can still recognize the verses and choruses, they just don't always happen when you would expect them to. I think this is mostly a good thing, at least if you're a true music lover.
3. You get to hear new material created recently from the Police! Listen with a musical ear and not with your ears from 1980 and you will have a great time. Do not expect The Police to be nostalgic. For them it seems to be a new show in a new age. I can respect this and they deserve the right to take musical liberties.
4. A few songs are reminiscant of the Sting-solo career jazzy vibe. However Stew and Andy are very much highlighted during this show so they are really into it and I am convinced they also have a good say about what happens.
On with the show....
My first time seeing The Police, EVER. 24 years of anticipation, ready to be released. I am standing with Dive, GSC and their hubbies about 100 feet behind the soundboard and slightly to the left (Sting's side). About 200 yards from the stage.
Message - Rocked. Stewart comes out, warms up the gong, POW! Nails it perfectly in the center, crowd goes nuts, Andy starts Message lick.
Sting kept asking the audience where everyone was on the chorus. He did refer to the crowd as Tennesee-ans which most of us were not.
Sync II - Rocked. Awesome intro build up in completely different key, then BANG into the "yo's" and that awesome Andy riff. This grabs you by the you-know-what and kicks your hiney. Nice 1/2 time rhythmic change of pace on "Daddy grips the wheel.." part.
Walking - Great. Not as big of a crowd response as I expected though.
Driven - Rocked. Sounded like Sting had a good hand in re-arranging this. It's a touch more jazzy on the chords and verses but really good.
Voices / When the world.. - Nice intro build up on Voices, smooth transistion into When the world. Strong performances from all three members.
Truth Hits - Waaaaayy slower than the original but still rocks. Ok maybe a bit too slow for me because I enjoy rocking out, but I did enjoy it.
Every Little Thing - Tastefully done. Intro is new, you don't really recognize song until Sting starts the 1st verse. Nicely done though. Personally I would like to hear the chorus rock out more with snare on the back beat instead of the calypso island feel they are doing but the audience liked it alot. Extended outro on "Magic Magic Magic."
Wrapped - Awesome because of how musical, yet subtle and laidback it is. They use alot of space and Stew plays hit percussion setup on this (crotales, gongs, etc). This one really came off beautifully in the Bonnaroo outdoor setting. Quite an awesome musical moment.
Bed's Too Big - As close to the original as it's gonna get and AWESOME. This one sent shivers. You can remininsce on this one my friends. Not quite long enough improv jam in the middle though (like old days). This was one of my favs.
De Do Do Do - There's something magic about the chemistry of the original part during the verse that is so very wonderful and they do it right. I love it when they play that lick with out singing the verse. WOW. Awesome as well.
Walking in your Footsteps - Great intro and builp up with Stew on Percussion again, then it kicks into an amazing new groove the rest of the song where Andy lets it all hang out. This is a great example of how re-arranging the songs is paying off for them. Definitely one of the best arrangements in the set in my opinion.
CSLY/Regatta - YESSSSSSS! GSC and I run up closer to hear this one. Another one that's as close to the original as it's gonna get. POW! Regatta hits and I am jumping up and down to the beat as Andy plays some thunderous low chords first then into the upper original Regatta lick. It's at this point that I realize I really am seeing the Police, it's really happening. Wow.
Roxanne - Everyone in the audience sings with Sting on this. Sounds great, mostly like the Grammys, which is pretty much the original, but a little more extended in the jam section. GREAT!
King of Pain - This intro is recognized easiest by the audience and they cheer loudly when it starts. Stew starts on the percussion, then jumps on the kit, BAM! The groove is on. Sting sings the verse and the "Is (or it's)my soul up there" part very well. I think he could get the audience to sing that part really loud and it would be really nice. Andy kicks in the lead solo part and you have no doubt you are seeing The Police and you're back in 1983 for a moment! Awesome.
So Lonely - Good job here but arranged in a different key so Sting can sing it lower. Perhaps too low in my opinion but still rocks out for the most part. Sting still has the range to sing it higher, he just chooses not to I guess.
EBYT - Nicely Done, pretty much like the original. Again, it's 1983 for a moment. I call my wife to let her hear some over the cell phone. Classic moment.
Next to You - Starts out a little weird (mistake perhaps?) then gets going well. Nice to hear them rock out for the most part. Andy's guitar not quite loud enough (for the closer anyway) but good energy. Stew hams it up on the double BD pedals at the end. This of course is fun to watch and the camera pans in on him doing this. GSC and I geek out over this for a moment because we both play drums. Song purposely speeds up at the end, few mistakes going into the final chord but big ending sets things right. Still, not the most perfectly executed performance in tonight's set but I'll take it.
