New Police Gig?

Am I the only one who sees extra significance to St. Jeff so adamantly dismissing this story other than to confirm that the boys will not be playing in Croatia?
No worries, smudge. We can smoke dope in Croatia. I hear the Police are playing next spring.

May I get a translation into American please? I love the sound of this, even if I haven't a clue what it actually says.
Can't give you an origin, but if a copper in a 60's UK police drama arrested an unsavory character who had been doing something worthy of a 60's police drama (stealing eggs from a hen-house for example), the unsavory character would say something along those lines. Putting 'guv' on the end adds to the period authenticity.

ETA: You may want to check the currency of the expression with people who are currently involved in law enforcement.

In the US, the word "bang" would be replaced by "dead"

There's a cops carrying guns (or not) joke in there somewhere, but damned if I can find it.

But maybe he's doing so because they ARE playing in Croatia (or is that what you said?)

I think 'Bang to rights' means a fair cop. If you've been naughty and got caught doing it then it's a fair cop and so you were caught 'Bang to rights'. An accurate arrest.

I'm not sure where it originated from but remember, as a child, being told that the fighter pilots during WW2 would use the expression "Bang On!" when they hit an intended target, possibly where the expressions Dead on, spot on, or dead to rights comes from.

Just to confuse matters, here, we use the expression 'banging on' when someone is talking too much and for too long. If you are a victim of someone 'banging on' then you have been 'nailed to the floor' and I don't even want to think about the origin of that.

...and listen to me, banging on!

That's not what I meant. I read into St. Jeff's comment that there is a snowball's chance in Hell that the boys will be doing anything together in the next 30 or so years.

Well, we know Stewart's hanging out in Sundance with the hoi polloi, right?

I gotta say, DAMN did I miss him behind the kit the other night whilst Stingo played the Haiti telethon. There was decent backup, but I well recall how well our man would go nuts during that song...:sigh:
On Google - site:stewartcopeland.net "your keyword here" - thanks DM!!
