What other artists do we like?

What other artists do we like?

I'm always interested in the commonality of tastes. Personally (and perhaps this is due to my being a lifelong musician), I find I have a very eclectic range of music that I enjoy, ranging from rock to pop to metal to classical to reggae, and much more.

So, we know we're all fans of the mighty Stewart (and presumably the Police as well). But I'm going to name a few other artists who are really special to me, and let's find out if there's any common threads that bind us beyond our love of the Rhythmatist. In no particular order...

- Joni Mitchell
- Neil Young & Crazy Horse
- Led Zeppelin
- Pink Floyd
- The Who/Pete Townshend
- Jimi Hendrix
- The Cars
- The Beatles (duh)
- Bob Marley
- Steely Dan

By the way: please don't get the idea that my entire musical experience cut off at around 1985. I like lots of stuff done in the last 20 years, but they haven't quite made it to my echelon of all-time classics yet.

How about you? What's in heavy rotation in your iTunes list other than Police-related stuff?

- Foo Fighters
- The Beatles
- The Who/Pete Townshend
- Genesis (PG-era through "Mama")/Peter Gabriel
- Marillion/Fish

From "the old days" in my life only The Police survived and a little bit of U2 as long as I don't have to listen to Bono being interviewed.

In short I would say I am an "iTunes fan" - buying music from there really opened up my mind and my ears for a lot of new stuff - ever since then all my godchildren think I am cool!

THE BEE GEES ( please dont laugh! :( )
NIRVANA
NICKLEBACK
GREEN DAY
GEORGE MICHAEL :oops:
PHIL COLLINS
AND LAST BUT DEFINITELY NOT LEAST NEK .... HE IS AMAZING!!
IVE BEEN LISTENING TO HIS MUSIC SINCE 1999 AND I LOVE IT!!

Jeesh. The list could go on forever. But the main ones that I always find myself going back to are probably

* R.E.M.
* Led Zeppelin
* The Doors
* Peter Gabriel
* The "Grunge" All-Stars (Pearl Jam/Nirvana/Stone Temple Pilots/Alice in Chains)
* Queen
* Bjork
* Tori Amos
* Suddenly Tammy
* Black 47
* Radiohead
* Aerosmith
* Stone Roses

(I'd like to add Hendrix to the list, but I have just realized that I have no Hendrix CDs. How could I have possibly overlooked Jimi?)

Right. That's what I'm talking about. The ones that get past the enfatuation stage and settle into the, "I will always listen to these songs" zone.

My true list would include at least 100 (if not more) artists, ranging from Frank Zappa to Iron Maiden to the Carpenters to Bowie to Nirvana to Earth, Wind & Fire. Those ten I listed, though, are the ones that will always be with me, not matter what.

Damn it! This is too hard! I've already gone back and added twice! It's like Sophie's Choice!

. . . struggling not to keep adding . . . to stop thinking . . . to not curse out da weasel . . .
Dramatic highlights & a unique musical cosmos. Guaranteed.

great thread jeff...

other than the police obviously, it's hard to pick, so just the ones that i find myself reaching for as staples:

the smiths
van morrison
the sundays
depeche mode
bob dylan
THE CLASH (that one rates all caps, sorry)
concrete blonde
isley brothers
queen
primus (any claypool really)
sublime
nina simone
curtis mayfield

and many more............

i really don't like a lot of contemporary music. it irks me. if you want to make a recommendation based on my tastes anyone - please feel free - i'm always open to new music! i'm a big itunes downloader... i fish around until i find something that sounds good.
